Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann (June 8, 1810 - July 29, 1856) was the arch-Romantic composer, thoroughly committed intellectually and emotionally to the idea of music being composed to register the feelings, thoughts and impressions garnered by a sensitive spirit on its journey through life. Schumann was born into a devoted family based in Zwickau, 40 miles south of Leipzig. His musical and literary leanings were encouraged by his father who secured a tutor for him; although the lessons were rudimentary, the boy was composing little pieces by the age of seven. He entered Zwickau Gymnasium aged 10, matriculating in 1828; the latter part of his time there was increasingly spent writing, especially poetry. While at the Gymnasium his beloved father died, leaving his mother with no alternative but to place Robert under the guardianship of a family friend. It was decided that Schumann should study law at Leipzig University, which he joined in 1828.

Composers Schumann, Robert Schumann, Robert Robert Schumann, b. Zwickau, June 8, 1810, d. July 29, 1856, was a major German romantic composer and pianist. He began to study the piano at an early age and wrote his first compositions when still a schoolboy. His enthusiasm for literature was almost as great as his love of music, and his early attempts at poetry, prose, and drama served him well in his later career, for he became one of the outstanding composer-critics of his day and remained highly sensitive to the relationship between words and music throughout his life.
Schumann began to study law at Leipzig University, later moving to Heidelberg, where a law professor, Justus Thibaut, deepened his knowledge of aesthetics. Schumann, who had heard Moscheles play the piano years before and had never forgotten the experience, attended a concert given by Paganini, which inspired him to work even harder at the piano. His teacher was Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara (a virtuoso pianist) he later married. In composition, however, Schumann was virtually self-taught, his formal instruction in theoretical subjects being limited to a few months of harmony lessons and a few weeks studying orchestration.

Piano Concerto in A minor' Opus 54, Third Movement ' of this joyous Romantic concerto is playing for me now as I write. It started off in what I can only describe as a blaze of color with a solo piano taking center stage. A running theme, still on the piano, but with a softer orchestral accompaniment, soon leads to the famous march like tune, first given quietly on the strings, and then again taken up by the piano. The sense of celebration throughout the music is infectious. And if you like piano music, then you will like this piece. Schumann wrote it for his talented wife Clara, who became an influential teacher as well as a notable composer, and went on to become the most important woman pianist of the 19 th century. Born on 8 th Robert's mother, who gave him his first music lessons, lived in an exaggerated state of romance, and was subject to sudden violent passions and sentimentalism. When Robert was only sixteen years old, his sister committed suicide, and not long after his father died suddenly. With so unstable a family background it is small wonder that all his life he was haunted by fears of madness.

Piano Robert Schumann (June 8, 1810 – July 29, 1856), a German composer and pianist, was one of the most important Romantic composers of the first half of the nineteenth century, as well as a highly regarded music critic. An intellectual and an aesthete, his music reflects the deeply personal nature of Romanticism . Introspective and often whimsical, his early music was an attempt to break with the tradition of the classical music era and form and structure which he thought too restrictive. Little understood in his lifetime, much of his music is now regarded as daringly original in harmony rhythm , and form. He stands in the front rank of German composers of the nineteenth century. Schumann, can be said to be one of the first truly Romantic composers of the central European music tradition. As with many composers of the Romantic period, the literature of the era played heavily into the inspiration of his creative output. He was a person given to emotional extremes and his marriage to the gifted pianist and composer Clara Wieck would become a stabilizing aspect in his life. Schumann's attitude reflects a central tenet of the Romanticism spirit, namely that music (or any artistic expression) is a direct outpouring of an artist's innermost feelings and emotions. As musicologist Danial J. Grout suggests, "In a very general sense, all art may be said to be Romantic; for, though it may take its materials from everyday life, it transforms them and thus creates a new world which is necessarily, to a greater or lesser degree, remote from the every day world."

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) - classical composer
Schumann's parents were not musical but they encouraged his interest in music with Piano lessons from the age of 10. However his family was later to be beset by tragedy. When Schumann was in his teens, his father died and his sister committed suicide in quick succession, events that were to have a deep impact on the young musician. Initially music was to take a back seat in his life. For his main subject he studied law at Leipzig while simultaneously continuing his music studies. One of his music teachers was Friedrich Wieck whose daughter Clara showed a great talent at the piano while she was only 9 years old. A further tragedy was to hit Schumann when a mishap damaged one of his hands and spoiled his chances as a pianist. Some accounts blame a device he used to strengthen his fingers, but other theories suggest mercury poisoning as a side effect of his syphilis treatment. After the accident, Schumann was to concentrate more on composing. Schumann maintained his association with the Wiecks and when Clara was of the right age, he sought to marry her but her father forbade it. Following a legal action, Schumann was able to marry her shortly before her 21st birthday. Although Clara was extremely talented in her own right as both pianist and composer, her career became secondary to that of her husband's and there are suggestions that Robert's jealousy was a factor in constraining her career. Nevertheless as well as bringing up three children Clara played a significant role in classical music, through her expert advice and encouragement to other composers including

"The laws of morality are also those of art" - Robert Schumann The following is the story of a group of composers who led a spirited, if unsuccessful, battle to defend the tradition of classical music composition, during the 19th Century. The intellectual leadership was provided by the composer Robert Schumann, who also wrote for and edited a journal of music criticism, the New Journal for Music ). In declaring the purpose of his journal, Schumann wrote: "The age of mutual compliments is gradually sinking into its grave. Frankly, we are not minded to assist its resurrection. He who does not attack the bad, defends the good but halfway. Our purpose... is to remind our readers emphatically of the distant past and its works. Then, to emphasize the fact that the contemporary artist can secure strength for the creation of new beauty only by drinking from such pure fountains. Then, to attack as inartistic the immediate past, which is concerned merely with encouraging superficial virtuosity. Lastly, to help prepare and hasten the coming of a new poetic era." Carnaval
Schumann used his journal as a weapon against the banal and empty theatrical and virtuoso-compositions which were then popular. It chafed him no end that so soon after the deaths of Beethoven and Schubert, the public taste had been won by the likes of Rossini. In a review of a performance of Beethoven's four overtures to
