Schwantner (born March 22, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois ) is a Pulitzer Prize winning American composer and educator and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . He was awarded the 1970 Charles Ives Prize Schwantner is prolific, with many works to his credit. His style is accessible, coloristic and eclectic, drawing on such diverse elements as French impressionism, African drumming, and minimalism . His orchestral work Aftertones of Infinity received the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Music. He also wrote violinist, Anne Akiko Meyers , 'Angelfire', a fantasy for amplified violin and orchestra.

JOSEPH SCHWANTNER Joseph Schwantner is recognized as one of the foremost composers of the late 20th and early 21st century. His works for wind ensemble, orchestra, chamber ensembles and solo performance have received world-wide acclaim and stand today as monuments to his unique and innovative approach to composition. Joseph was born in Chicago and received his musical and academic training at the Chicago Conservatory and Northwestern University, completing a doctorate in 1968. Previously, he served on the Yale, Eastman and Juilliard faculties and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Schwantner was the first composer-in-residence with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as part of the MEET THE COMPOSER/Orchestra Residencies Program funded by the Exxon Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work, " Magabunda: four poems of Agueda Pizarro " and " A Sudden Rainbow ", originally recorded on Nonesuch Records by the Saint Louis Symphony, each received a Grammy Award nomination in the category, Best New Classical Composition Joseph was awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his work "

TABLE 12 SEVENTY-THREE COMPOSITIONS FAMILIAR TO ALL TWENTY EVALUATORS RECEIVING THE MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF POINTS LISTED BY PERCENTAGE OF MAXIMUM POSSIBLE POINTS The purpose of this study was to determine what available compositions, from a selected list of compositions for wind and percussion instruments in ensemble combination utilizing a conductor, most closely meet the criteria of serious artistic merit? One hundred ninety-one compositions were identified as meeting the specific criteria of serious artistic merit and are identified in Tables 12-17 listed in the study. These Tables are organized according to evaluator familiarity. Table 12 is a listing of 73 compositions known to all twenty evaluators. The percentage of maximun possible points is the derived from comparing the total number of points awared by the evaluators to the maximum number of points the piece could recieve.
