Bright Sheng Leonard Bernstein Distinguished University Professor of Composition bsheng@umich.edu Office: 2216 Moore Bright Sheng is a composer, conductor, and pianist. In April of 1999, Mr. Sheng received a special commission from the White House to create a new work for a state dinner, hosted by the president, honoring the Chinese Premiere Zhou Rongji. In October 2001, Bright Sheng was named a MacArthur Fellow with a cash prize of $500,000. Professor Sheng has appeared as solo pianist and conductor with the San Francisco Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Russia), Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany), Hong Kong Philharmonic, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and China National Symphony,among others, and has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Chinese-born American composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, and vocal works that have been performed throughout the world; he is also active as a conductor and pianist. Prof. Sheng studied piano with his mother as a child and studied composition with Wang Jian-zhong at the Conservatory of Music in Shanghai from 1978-82. He studied composition with George Perle and Hugo Weisgall at Queens College and there earned his MA in 1984 and later studied composition with Jack Beeson and Chou Wen-chung at Columbia University, where he earned his DMA in 1993. He also studied composition and conducting privately with Leonard Bernstein from 1985-90. He has received many honors in China, as well as three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Charles Ives Scholarship Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters (1984) and the Rackham Fellowship from the University of Michigan (2000). He has also earned the Michigan Arts Award (2001), the MacArthur Fellowship Award (2001), the American Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2001), and the ASCAP Achievement Award (2002). Home Biography Conductor/Pianist Bio Bright Sheng is respected as one of the foremost composers of our time, whose stage, orchestral, chamber and vocal works are performed regularly throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Sheng’s music is noted for its lyrical and limpid melodies, a Shostakovich sense of breath in music phrases, a Bartokian sense of rhythmic propulsion, and dramatic and theatrical gestures. Many of Sheng’s works has strong Chinese and Asian influences, a result of his diligent study of Asian musical cultures for over three decades. He was proclaimed by the MacArthur Foundation in 2001 as “an innovative composer who merges diverse musical customs in works that transcend conventional aesthetic boundaries.” The Foundation predicts that “Bright Sheng will continue to be an important leader in exploring and bridging musical traditions.” Born in December, 1955, in Shanghai, Sheng began studying the piano with his mother at age four. During China’s infamous Cultural Revolution, at fifteen he was sent to Qinghai—a Chinese province bordering Tibet—where for seven years he performed as a pianist and percussionist in the provincial music and dance theater, and studied folk music of the region. Since moving to the United States from China in 1982, the composer Bright Sheng has steadily built a world reputation for his fusion of Eastern and Western musical styles. Sheng's gifts of adaptability and openness were nurtured and steeled in his youth, as he struggled to maintain his passion for music in the anti-cultural climate of the Cultural Revolution . At Queens College, the City University and Columbia, his main teachers were Leonard Bernstein, Chou WenChung and George Perie. Sheng's one-act opera The Song of Majnun with librettist Andrew Porter was recorded on the Delos label by the Houston Grand Opera. The University Record , October 29, 2001 Music professor Bright Sheng receives MacArthur award By Dana Fair News and Information Services Sheng Since arriving in the U.S. in 1982, Sheng has developed compositions that are fresh characterizations crossing musical and cultural traditions. His vast array of works include: The Song of Majnun , an opera, which in one act, revisits an Asian tale of star-crossed lovers; Flute Moon , which reworks a classic Chinese art song from the 13th century; and Nanking! Nanking! a lamentation on World War II atrocities suffered by the Chinese. Affiliated with the U-M since 1995, Sheng has been commissioned by and performed at orchestras and opera houses in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Japan, Russia, Great Britain and Germany, and will present a full-length opera at the Sante Fe Opera in 2003. His national honors and recognitions include a Guggenheim Fellowship.
