He takes all the pieces in his hand, throws them into the world, and we have to recreate the picture from the pieces." Sibelius was born into a Swedish-speaking family in Hämeenlinna in the Russian Empire Grand Duchy of Finland. Although known as Janne to his family, during his student years he began using the French form of his name, Jean, from a stack of visiting cards used by his seafaring uncle. Significantly, against the larger context of the rise of the Fennoman movement and its expressions of Romantic Nationalism, his family decided to send him to an important Finnish language school, and he attended The Hämeenlinna Normal-lycée from 1876 to 1885. Romantic Nationalism was to become a crucial part of Sibelius's artistic output and his politics. In the 1890s Sibelius joined with other revolutionary artists, musicians and writers to protest the increasingly tyrannical repression of

Brought up in a Swedish-speaking family, Sibelius acquired a knowledge of Finnish language and traditional literature at school and the early Finnish sagas proved a strong influence on his subsequent work as a composer.
Historical Context
Jean Sibelius was the most renowned composer that Finland has ever produced. He was born on December 8th, 1865. As a child he showed promise as a violinist and a pianist. He initially enrolled at the University at Helsinki in law, but later decided that he truly loved music. The next year he enrolled and the Conservatory and began a trip around Europe, highlighted by Berlin and Vienna. During this trip he developed a liking for the life of high society. He took on many habits such as excessive drinking and gambling. Upon his return to Finland he married Aino Jarnefelt. She was a memebr of the aristocratic family in Finland. Through her he would maintain his habits. Nonetheless she would say with him until his death. In 1894, he heard a Wagnerian opera. He was so impressed by its quality that he decided to never compose an opera in fear that it would not match

Biography
Finnish composer, the best-known symphonic composer of Scandinavia and one of the most original musical figures of the 20th century. He wrote works for orchestra and stage. Some of his more popular music included the Karelia Suite and the Valse triste, both composed for the stage; seven symphonies; concertos and chamber music, and vocal and choral music. After 1897, he worked under the auspices of a government grant in 1897. Sibelius received his early training in Helsinki and later Berlin, primarily on the violin. He gave up law studies to enter the Helsinki Conservatory, then abandoned the violin to devote full time to composing. He broadened his background considerably when he moved to Berlin. While there, he was deeply affected by the "Aino Symphony," written by his countryman Robert Kajanus. His first major work based on "The Kalevala," the Kullero Symphony was successful when introduced in 1892, the same year that he was appointed to the Conservatory faculty. Finnish folksongs also helped shape his style. Sibelius grew up at a time of fervent Finnish nationalism, while the country was breaking away from its Swedish and Russian history. He was brought up in a Swedish-speaking family, and acquired a knowledge of Finnish language and literature. The early Finnish sagas were a strong influence on his future compositions.
