b Nejmecky Brod, baptised 19 June 1717
d Mannheim, 27 March 1757, aged thirty-nine
His early instruction was from his father. From 1728 to 1734 he attended the Jesuit Gymnasium in Jahlava, and from 1734 to 1735 he was at Prague University. He was appointed to the Mannheim court in 1741 as violin virtuoso, also playing viola d'amore, cello and double-bass. He advanced rapidly at court and by 1750 was created director of instrumental music. He married in 1744 and had five children, including the composers Karl and Anton. In 1754 he undertook a year-long journey to Paris, where his work was immensely successful. He wrote: twenty-nine symphonies, ten orchestral trios, seventeen violin concertos and many concertos for other instruments, and other orchestral works; many chamber works and sacred choral works and songs. A great deal of his output has been lost.

Stamitz, Johann (Wenzel Anton)
(b c k u v Brod, Czech Republic]d. March 27, 1757, Mannheim, Palatinate [Germany]), German composer who founded the Mannheim school of symphonists , which had an immense influence on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Stamitz received early musical education from his father and appeared as a violinist at the coronation of the emperor Charles VII in Frankfurt am Main in 1742. He became a chamber musician to Prince Karl Theodor (Elector Palatine after 1743) and in 1745 was appointed concertmaster of the court orchestra at Mannheim. Stamitz brought the Mannheim orchestra to a standard unrivaled in its day for both precision and scope of expression. The orchestral effects of a gradual crescendo and diminuendo, though not his invention, became a hallmark of his style and were imitated by later composers. Another characteristic of his style was the use of "sighing" suspensions, particularly at cadences. These were incorporated into Rococo-style music throughout Europe. His use of the minuet and trio as the third movement of a four-movement symphony was similarly adopted by Classical composers, in place of the three-movement symphony previously common. He contributed to the evolution of the Classical sonata form by introducing contrasting themes within a single movement.

STAMITZ, JOHANN BIOGRAPHY
The Bohemian composer Johann Stamitz, a versatile performer on a number of instruments, is chiefly known for his work with the Mannheim orchestra, which he built into what a later visitor, the English Dr Burney, described as an army of generals. He seems to have joined the musical establishment of the Elector Palatine, whose capital was at Mannheim, in 1741, as a violinist, and by 1750 had become director of instrumental music. The Mannheim orchestra became famous for its discipline, evident in particular in the Mannheim crescendo, an effective increase in volume and following decrease that became a feature of the music written for the orchestra, which had other characteristic features, including the ascending melodic figure known as the Mannheim rocket. Chamber Music A smaller amount of chamber music by Stamitz consists of trios and sonatas for violin and basso continuo.
