Written Duration Comments Dedicated to Richard Muhlfeld, but premiered by Charles Draper in 1904. The concerto was written in 1902 but was not published until 1977. An important concerto since no other late romantic work is in the repertoire. First two movements are for Bb Clarinet while the last movement is for the A Clarinet. While the work is highly influenced by Brahms, the Concerto is more original. Publisher J. B. Cramer

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford
Born and raised in Dublin, Stanford was the only son of a prosperous Protestant lawyer. His genius for classical musical forms gained him admission to Cambridge University at the age of 18 where he quickly established a commanding reputation, and was appointed organist of Trinity College while still an undergraduate. Afterward he went to Germany to study composition with Carl Reinecke in Leipzig, and later with Friedrich Kiel in Berlin. He went on to compose in almost every music form including seven symphonies; ten operas; fifteen concertante works; chamber, piano, and organ pieces; and over thirty large-scale choral works. His voluminous sacred music continues to be the foundation of the Anglican tradition. Stanford has often been dismissed in this century as a German imitator; an unoriginal fabricator of "Brahmsian" music. However, anything more than a cursory investigation of his music reveals his Celtic roots, as well as his intense individuality. This combining of German and Celtic traditions to create an integrated idiom was instrumental in establishing an English style upon which the next generation of British composer could build. In his article on Stanford for the New Grove, Frederick Hudson writes, "Stanford's name is linked with those of

Stanford, Sir Charles Villiers
(b . Sept. 30, 1852, Dublind. March 29, 1924, London), Anglo-Irish composer, conductor, and teacher who greatly influenced the next generation of British composers; Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Arthur Bliss, and Gustav Holst were among his pupils. Stanford studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and Queen's College, Cambridge, and between 1874 and 1877 with Karl Reinecke in Leipzig and Friedrich Kiel in Berlin. He became professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in London in 1883 and professor of music at Cambridge in 1887. He also conducted the London Bach Choir (1885-1902) and the Leeds Triennial Festival orchestra (1901-10). He was knighted in 1901. Stanford was a prolific composer and was especially known for his orchestral works (notably his five Irish Rhapsodies ), his songs, and his operas. His music reflects the late 19th-century Romantic style, into which he introduced elements of Irish folk song. Stanford was educated at Cambridge (1880-4) where he returned in 1873 as the organist of Trinity College, and then later appointed as professor in 1887. From 1883, he also taught at the Royal College of Music (his own education having been complete under Reinecke in Leipzig (1874-5), and Kiel in Berlin (1876)).
Apart from his Anglican cathedral music, little of his large output (nearly 200 opus numbers) has remained in performance. His works include ten operas (notably Shamus O'Brien (1896), Much ado about nothing (1901), and The travelling companion (1926)), partsongs (from which The blue bird is still remembered), seven symphonies, and other orchestral scores (including the Clarinet Concerto (1902), and a series of Irish Rhapsodies), eight string quartets, and organ and piano music.

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford
Biography
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (30 September 1852 – 29 March 1924) was an Irish-born composer, resident in England for much of his life. He is particularly notable for his choral music. From 1887 until 1924 he was professor of music at University of Cambridge.
Life
Stanford was born in Dublin, the only son of John Stanford, examiner in the Court of Chancery (Dublin) and clerk of the Crown, County Meath. Both parents were accomplished amateur musicians; his father sang bass (and was also a cellist ) and his mother was a pianist. Charles trained under R. M. Levey (violin), Miss Meeke, Mrs Joseph Robinson, Miss Flynn and Michael Quarry (piano); and Sir Robert Stewart taught him composition and organ. His precocious ability was recorded in an article in The Musical Times in December 1898.
During his tenure many interesting performances and revivals took place. From 1874 to 1877 he was given leave of absence for part of each year to complete his studies in Germany, where he studied first with Carl Reinecke and then, more fruitfully, with Friedrich Kiel. He took his BA degree (Classics) in 1874 and MA in 1878, and was given the honorary degree of D.Mus. at Oxford in 1883 and at Cambridge in 1888.
