Alain Locke Correspondence
Alain Locke (b. September 13, 1885 Philadelphia, Pa. d. Washington, D.C. 1954) is best known for his involvement with the Harlem Renaissance, although his work and influence extend well beyond. Through The New Negro , published in 1925, Locke popularized and most adequately defined the Renaissance as a movement in black arts and letters. His interest and writings cover a wide range of topics, including philosophy, music, art, literature, anthropology, political theory, sociology, and African Studies. Besides his chairing and teaching in the Department of Philosophy at Howard University, he spent a great deal of time advising and encouraging many African American artists in various fields. This letter touches on several issues, including the development of black musicians and schools such as Fisk or Howard; ideas for setting Mrs. Biddle's (Katharine Garrison Chapin) poem on lynching (which would later develop into Still's cantata, And They Lynched Him On a Tree ) to music and informs him that Mrs. Biddle will get in touch with him. He also mentions that her brother-in-law, George Biddle, is the unpublicized friend responsible for the federal art idea with President Roosevelt.

From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (William Graham Sumner) Next (William H. Seward) William Grant Still. Photograph by Carl Van Vechten, March 12, 1949. William Grant Still (May 11, 1895 – December 3, 1978) was an African-American classical composer who wrote more than 150 compositions. He was the first African-American to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony of his own (his first symphony) performed by a leading orchestra, the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera performed on national television . He is often referred to as "the dean" of African-American composers. Still worked in a conventional tonal musical syntax and possessed a reactionary attitude towards the mathematical, formulaic music of the Second Viennese School. He believed that the emphasis on the intellectualizing of composition belied the essence of musical expression stating that in music of this style "intellect usually took precedence over the emotions, and while intellect is necessary to musical creation, it should be no more than subordinate to inspiration." Still was very much of the attitude that "inspired" music, music born out of emotion and heart, was an important measure of beauty and value in musical composition.

Still, William Grant
(b. May 11, 1895, Woodville, Miss., U.S.d. Dec. 3, 1978, Los Angeles), U.S. composer and conductor, and the first black to conduct a professional symphony orchestra in the United States. Though a prolific composer of operas, ballets, symphonies, and other works, he was best known for his Afro-American Symphony Darker America (1924) and From the Black Belt (1926) for chamber orchestra. Still's concern with the position of the blacks in U.S. society is reflected in many of his works, notably the Afro-American Symphony ; the ballets Sahdji (1930), set in Africa and composed after extensive study of African music, and Lenox Avenue (1937); and the operas The Troubled Island (1938; produced 1949), with a libretto by Langston Hughes, and Highway No. 1, U.S.A. (produced 1963 and 1977). Still's compositions from the mid-1930s show the jazz band as a major influence on his eclectic musical style. He made considerable use of material in the Negro stylethough rarely borrowing actual melodiesand preferred simple, commercial harmonies and orchestration, the use of which, however, was characterized by the highest professionalism and seriousness of purpose.
