Zum Tod von Karlheinz Stockhausen
Zurück im All

(b electronic and serial music (based on ordered arrangements of pitches, rhythms, and other musical elements), who exerted a strong influence on younger avant -garde composers. Stockhausen entered the Music High School in Cologne in 1947 and, later, the university. In 1951 he went to Paris, where he studied with the composers Olivier Messiaen and, for a time, Darius Milhaud. Returning to Cologne in 1953, Stockhausen cofounded its celebrated electronic-music studio West German Broadcasting (West deutscher Rundfunk), becoming director in 1963. From 1954 to 1956, at the University of Bonn, he studied phonetics, acoustics, and information theory, all of which influenced his theory and composition. After lecturing at the contemporary-music seminars at Darmstadt (1957), Stockhausen gave lectures and concerts in Europe and North America. From 1955 to 1958 he was coeditor of the theoretical journal Die Reihe ("The Row"), and from 1971 he was professor for composition at the Rhineland State Academy for Music in Cologne. Relatively unconcerned with musical tradition and history, Stockhausen explored fundamental psychological and acoustical aspects of music. As a counterbalance to the increasing mechanization of music, his works give performers a large role in determining certain elements ("parameters") of a composition, even to the extent of determining the form. This relaxation of his early preoccupation with rigid formal procedures reflects the influence of American composer John Cage's

Stockhausen, Karlheinz u n) [ key Messiaen and Darius Milhaud serial music techniques in his works, was a major developer and proponent of electronic music , and was enormously influential with many younger classical composers. His wide-ranging influence was also felt by a number of rock, pop, and jazz musicians of the 1960s and 70s. Often using complicated contrapuntal systems, Stockhausen's compositions are characterized by much emphasis on free rhythms, tonal repetition, dissonance, and percussive effects. He was an adherent of aleatory music and allowed performers to determine certain aspects of a performance, e.g., they can improvise, begin and end at different points, and decide at what speed to sing and play. Stockhausen's unique approach is well illustrated by his composition Gruppen [groups] (1957); in this piece three separate orchestras, each with its own conductor, play simultaneously; sometimes their music coincides; sometimes they play against one another; sometimes they play antiphonally. Among Stockhausen's other compositions are
