Gilbert and Sullivan / Their Lives and Times
by Leslie Baily
(London: Thames and Hudson, 1973; New York: Viking, 1974. 119 pages plus bibliography, chronology and index. 143 illustrations). Book jacket: It is properly Gilbertian that one product of the earnest and orderly Victorian age which continues vigorous and popular should be the topsy-turvy art known as Gilbert and Sullivan opera. In this lively and authoritative biography Leslie Baily sets its fascinatingly contrasted progenitors in the context of the world in which they worked and from which they drew their inspiration. W.S. Gilbert was in many ways a typical Victorian gentleman, yet his satirical absurdities often made his contemporaries uneasy; while Arthur Sullivan rose from a working-class background to become the foremost British composer of the day and the darling of smart society. With Richard D'Oyly Carte, whose business acumen allied to progressive taste catalyzed their talents, these two wrought a revolution in the theater, and Mr. Baily traces the story of their partnership from the inauspicious failure of

ARTHUR SEYMOUR SULLIVAN
Writer Information Arthur Sullivan was born in Bolwell Terrace, Lambeth, England on May 13, 1842. He was the musician in the famous Gilbert and Sullivan team, and is well known for numerous operettas written with the librettist W. S. Gilbert. He was able to play several instruments before he entered the Chapel Royal as a chorister at age twelve. Educated at the Royal Academy of Music, he was the first to hold the Mendelssohn Scholarship (in 1856). He studied there under Sterndale Bennet and John Goss. He also studied at the Leipzig Conservatory between 1858 and 1861. He returned to England where he held professorship and organist posts. Sullivan received several honorary doctorates and was knighted in 1883. His church music includes anthems and services as well as hymn tunes. Most of his 56 hymn tunes were written between 1867 and 1874, all of which were published in 1902 by Novello and Company. Tunes by Arthur Sullivan: COENA DOMINI FORTUNATUS ST. GERTRUDE

Discography of Sir Arthur Sullivan:
Hymns
Before his career took off as a comic opera composer, Sullivan made his living composing hymns and songs. The most famous of his hymns is surely "Onward, Christian soldiers," but he wrote many dozens of others. Nearly all of them date from before 1875 (the year of Trial by Jury ), with 1874 the most common year. Not coincidentally, he edited the SPCK's Church Hymns and Tunes during that year. Of the experience, he wrote (famously) to his mother: I hope that the hymn-book will be a blessing to the Church. It's a curse to me. Had I known the wearisome labours of it, I would not have undertaken it for a thousand pounds. The following table is taken from Jacobs, 2nd edn. Very few of the hymns have been recorded, but for those that have, the designation REC " points to a page with further details.
