Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck [Swelinck, Zwelinck, Sweeling, Sweelingh, Sweling, Swelingh]
Composer. The elder son of Peter Swybbertszdon and Elske Sweeling, he adopted his mother's family name. The assertion that he studied in Venice with Zarlino is not supported by surviving evidence. His only known teachers besides his father were Jacob Buyck, pastor at the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, and Jan Willemszoon Lossy, a countertenor and shawm player at Haarlem, who taught him not organ but composition. By 1580, and possibly as early as 1577, he was organist at the Oude Kerk; his duties there were probably to provide an hour of music twice daily in the church. He became famous for his brilliant improvisations at the organ and harpsichord. From this time onward he left Amsterdam only to inspect new organs and advise on repairs and restorations. As a teacher Sweelinck was influential and sought after, and his pupils were among the most highly regarded musicians of the time; they included Peter Hasse Samuel and Gottfried Scheidt Paulus Siefert Ulrich Cernitz , Jacob Praetorius, and Heinrich Scheidemann , founders of the so-called north German organ school of the 17th century. Sweelinck's 254 vocal works, which were all printed, include thirty-three chansons, nineteen madrigals, thirty-nine motets (

Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon
Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch composer, organist, and pedagogue whose work straddled the end of the Renaissance and beginning of the Baroque eras. Many of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck's family were musicians - principally organists. He was the elder son of Peter Swybbertszdon and Elske Sweeling, he adopted his mother's family name. The assertion that he studied in Venice with Zarlino, the famous composer and theorist, is not supported by surviving evidence. His only known teachers besides his father were Jacob Buyck, pastor at the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, and Jan Willemszoon Lossy, a counter-tenor and shawm player at Haarlem, who taught him not organ but composition.
As a teacher Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was influential and sought after, and his pupils were among the most highly regarded musicians of the time; they included Andreas Düben, Peter Hasse, Samuel Scheidt and Gottfried Scheidt, Paul Siefert, Ulrich Cernitz, Jacob Praetorius, and Johann Heinrich Scheidemann, founders of the so-called north German organ school of the 17th entury. He was known in Germany as the "maker of organists".

Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon
(b . April 1562, Amsterdamd. Oct. 16, 1621, Amsterdam), Dutch organist and composer, one of the principal figures in the development of organ music before J.S. Bach. Sweelinck succeeded his father as organist of the Oude Kerk (Old Church), Amsterdam, in about 1580 and remained in this post until his death. Apparently he never left the Low Countries and traveled only to Rotterdam and Antwerp. Although he composed much sacred and secular vocal music in the polyphonic traditions of France and the Netherlands (including the Chansons, the Cantiones sacrae , and settings of the Psalms), Sweelinck was chiefly known as an organist and keyboard composer. His keyboard music includes chorale variations, toccatas and fantasias showing the influence of the Venetian organ school, and sets of variations on secular tunes. Sweelinck's fantasias are among the first organ fugues in which a single theme is subjected to augmentation, diminution, and changes of rhythm and combined with counterthemes. His secular variations drew upon popular tunes of several European countries; an example is the set of variations on Mein junges Leben hat ein End' It is possible that Sweelinck met the English composers John Bull and Peter Philips during their visits to the Low Countries; Bull's "Fantasia on a Theme of Sweelinck" was the tribute of one keyboard virtuoso to another. Sweelinck's keyboard playing was widely known. His organ pupils included the German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann; Scheidemann's pupil J.A. Reinken handed on this tradition of organ playing to the Danish organist Dietrich Buxtehude. Many outstanding organists of the following generation, particularly in northern Germany, were pupils of Sweelinck; Handel and Bach were influenced by this northern German school of organ playing.

(Arr. David H. Bailey)
In older churches there were often two or more organs in different locations around the church. Antiphonal choral music often made use of the different locations, as did the antiphonal brass music of the Gabrielis in Venice. This echo fantasia made use of the different locations of organs , along with the different voicings of the organs, to create the echo effect. In this setting for flute choir, this fantasia provides an excellent way to use the different voices of flutes and an antiphonal positioning to achieve the same effect. It utilizes two choirs, one including piccolo, C-flute and bass flute and the other one utilizing C-flute, alto and bass flute. The C-flute parts have several divisi passages , requiring two players, but the other parts can be performed with only one on a part, or several can be used on each part to achieve a more choral effect.
