Born Germaine Taillefesse at Saint Maur Des Fossés, Ile-de-France, France, as a young woman she changed her last name to "Tailleferre" to spite her father who had refused to support her musical studies. She studied piano with her mother at home and composing short works of her own then began at the Conservatory in Paris where she met Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric and Arthur Honegger. At the Paris Conservatory she won first prize in several categories and wrote the 18 short works in the Petit livre de harpe de Madame Tardieu for Caroline Tardieu, the Conservatory’s Assistant Professor of Harp.
With her new friends, she soon was associating with the artistic crowd in Montmartre and Montparnasse including the sculptor Emmanuel Centore who would eventually marry her sister Jeanne. It was in the Montparnasse atelier of one of her painter friends where the initial idea for Les Six began. The publication of Jean Cocteau's manifest Le Coq et l'Arlequin resulted in Henri Collet's media articles that led to instant fame for the group. As the only female, she brought a uniquely fresh and feminine quality to the group’s compositions. Today, she is one of the most recorded.
The other members of "Les Six" were:
    Georges Auric - (1899-1983)
    Louis Durey - (1888-1979)

Holder of the Paris Conservatory’s highest awards, staunchly allied to her friends Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger, she was called upon by Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau to be part of the "Group of Six" (along with Poulenc, Auric, and Durey). These young composers, with Cocteau’s encouragement, rebelled against the impressionistic "fog" and the Wagnerian "pathos". Their inspration included popular and traditional musical forms. In Germaine Tailleferre one always finds a respect for musical tradition, in particular that of the 17th century masters, along with an instinctive use of polytonality. A friend of Stravinsky, Diaghilev, Ravel, Chaplin, Picasso, and a collaborator of the greatest writers of her time, in particular Claudel, Valéry, Ionesco, Soupault, Tardieu...Germaine Tailleferre’s optimistic music has captivated the most celebrated musicians: Ricardo Vinès, Marguerite Long, Arthur Rubinstein, Jacques Thibaud, Alfred Cortot, Lily Laskine, Nicanor Zabaleta... and prestigious conductors such as Pierre Monteux, Thomas Beecham, Léopold Stokowski, Serge Koussevitzky, Willem Mengelberg. She left behind her, at the end of a long creative life, some 400 works, piano and chamber music, symphonic works, ballets, operas, film music and melodies. She was an officier of the Legion of Honour, holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, the Music Prize of the Academy of Arts, the musical Grand Prix of the City of Paris.

    Biography
French woman composer who was the only woman member of the group of young composers, "The Six." She composed her first piano piece at the age of five and started her piano concerto performances in Europe and the U.S. in 1924. From 1942-1946, she lived in the U.S., teaching and composing. Blessed with natural grace, her music was composed with charm, spontaneity and freshness. She married twice; her first husband, Ralph Barton 1925-31, committed suicide shortly after their divorce. Her second husband was a French lawyer; one daughter. It was not an easy life, she had to work hard to keep up her creative output and survive financially. In her 90s, Tailleferre was still spry and youthful, living with a granddaughter, two cats and a dog.
