    Tchaikovsky
In 1888 Peter spent some time in Prague where he was received enthusiastically, the Slavic element of his music appealing to the Czechs. What work received the most thunderous applause at the end of an all-Tchaikovsky concert given in Prague? Tchaikovsky: The Man and his Music

The 1812 Overture . Peter himself considered the patriotic battle piece, the "1812" rather noisy and of no great account. However, he wrote after the concert, "...I have become so attached to these good Bohemians. And with good reason! Heavens, what enthusiasm!"
After the critical and public success of his "Fifth Symphony", Peter was inspired to write his magnificent ballet "The Sleeping Beauty." How long did it take Peter to have a working sketch of the entire ballet ready? Tchaikovsky: The Man and his Music

3 weeks . At the glittering St. Petersburg dress rehearsal performed before the Imperial Court, the Tsar could think of nothing to say except, "Very charming!" The public, however, took the ballet to their hearts and "The Sleeping Beauty" became a classic of the Russian and international stage.

German composer (b. 22 May 1813 in Leipzig ; d. 13 February 1883 in Venice ), born Wilhelm Richard Wagner Before 1862, the year that he enrolled in the newly established Saint Petersburg Pavlovsk directed by Johann Strauss . Some thirty years later, in January 1893, Tchaikovsky would write an open letter to a Parisian newspaper protesting at an article which had appeared in Le Figaro Moscow and Saint Petersburg Anton Rubinstein had been so jealous of the German composer that, while he was at the helm of music life in his country, he had made sure that all doors were closed to Wagner in Russia! Tchaikovsky refuted this gross misrepresentation and jumped to the defence of his former teacher: "Wagner's music is anything but unknown in Russia. Not only is it a fact that Anton Rubinstein never prevented its dissemination in our country, but it was actually he who, as the founder of the Imperial Russian Musical Society in 1859, acquainted our public with it. Wagner himself came to Russia in 1863 and organized in both capitals a long series of concerts which were very much epoch-making. Since then the music of this great German master has taken root in our country" Although Anton Rubinstein was in fact not so keen on Wagner, it is fair to say that he did not actively prevent its entry into Russia, and, moreover, his younger brother

Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is probably most famous in the United States today for his wonderful ballet, "TheNutcracker Suite". He was born on May 7, 1840, in Votkinsk, Russia. His father was in charge of the local mine, which was run by the state. Young Peter began his piano lessons when he was 7 years old, but he was not encouraged by his family to study music. Instead, when he was 10 years old, his father enrolled him in a school in Leningrad (that city was called St. Petersburg during Tchaikovsky's time). This school taught general education studies, followed by studies in the law. Young Peter was learning how to be a lawyer. However, Tchaikovsky's mother died in 1854, when he was 14 years old. Peter took his mother's death very hard, and never really got over it. When he finished school, Tchaikovsky worked as a law clerk for the Russian Justice Department. However, he never really forgot about music, and when he was 23 years old, he began his studies as a full-time student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1865, he became a harmony teacher at the Conservatory of Moscow. His teacher, another famous pianist/composer (Anton Rubenstein), helped him to get this position. Tchaikovsky remained at the Conservatory as a professor until 1878. His early compositions were not received very well by the public. He wrote an opera, "The Voyevoda", in 1868. That same year he wrote "Romeo and Juliet". He had also written his first symphony by this time. Tchaikovsky was a very nervous person, and nearly suffered nervous breakdowns often during his early career. He was married for a short time while he was still teaching at the Moscow Conservatory, but the marriage soon broke apart.

Tchaikovsky, Wienawski: Violin Concertos / Joshua Bell (2006)
Posted By : Benzok Date : Comments : Tchaikovsky, Wienawski: Violin Concertos / Joshua Bell (2006) Though Bell was only 20 years old when some of these works were recorded, his playing is fresh and exciting, and his technique is nearly flawless. Bell plays these well-known Romantic melodies with a warm, beautiful sound and with natural (yet spontaneous) phrasing. Bell's intonation is quite good throughout (there are just a few sharp high notes), and the cadenzas and highly technical passages are pulled off with stunning virtuosity and grace. There is not a single moment where Bell sounds unsure of himself. The Cleveland Orchestra (under both batons) is fantastic. The orchestra is perfectly balanced with the solo violin, as well as with itself. The accompanying woodwind passages are clear and beautiful, the strings are warm and unobtrusive, and the brass sound is powerful, yet well contained.~~ Amazon Tracklisting: Cleveland Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy log EAC: Exact Audio Copy V0.99 prebeta 3 from 28. Plot
Innokenty Smotkunovsky essays the title role in the Russian production Tchaikovsky (released in some areas as Tchaikowski). Avoiding the erotic sensationalism of Kenneth Russell's The Music Lovers , the film illustrates how Tchaikovsky's life and work were virtually one in the same. Among the many highlights are the re-creations of the composer's ballets, brilliantly performed by Maya Plisetskaya . Hollywood-based composer Dmitri Tiomkin who arranged the music for Tchaikovsky and the picture itself earned Academy Award nominations. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Movie Review: V for Vendetta Alternate Title: A for Allegory Story: Boy was I entertained! Who knew that I would become a big fan of graphic novels that are brought to the big screen? (Examples are 2005's Sin City, A History of Violence and Batman Begins It is somewhere in the not too distant future. The US is embroiled in civil war, drought and chaos. The world is in a sorry state. London is now ruled by a totalitarian regime who came to power after a mysterious disease killed over 100,000 people. The Government is unrelenting in its Fascist like control over the lives of its citizens via fear, surveillance, curfews, reduction of human rights and media control. The undesirables, the indigent, any political opposition, homosexuals, and all else who do not fit the mold have been swept up, warehoused, beaten and most killed. It is bleak. Enter 'V', in a Guy Fawkes mask (Fawkes was a 17th Century rebel who tried to blow up Parliament because of King James I's treatment of Catholics) to right the wrongs that have plagued the populace. 'V' and his young sidekick Evey will save the day. I was enthralled within minutes by the look of the film (all angles, shadows and knock your socks off splashes of color) and fell into its seductive trap with the first large explosion of Old Bailey to the music of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.
