    The Young Tchaikovsky
Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky was born in Russia in 1840. He loved and created great music all his life. Peter once said, "I started to compose as soon as I knew what music was." That's true. Tchaikovsky was just four years old when he composed a song about his mother. His two-year-old sister, Alexandra, helped him. When Peter was 10 his marks at school were terrific. To celebrate, his mother took him to see an opera . It was written by Glinka, a man known as "the father of Russian Music". Glinka became one of Tchaikovsky's heroes. Music was a big part of Peter Tchaikovsky's schoolwork. His class often went to plays and operas together. He sang in the school choir and took piano lessons.

Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was one of the most loved of Russian composers. His music is famous for its strong emotion, and his technical skill and strict work habits helped guarantee its lasting appeal.
Early years
Born on May 7, 1840, in Votkinsk in the Vyatka district of Russia, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was the son of a successful engineer. Peter and his brothers and sister received a sound education from their French governess. His parents sometimes took him to concerts, and after one such evening he complained that he could not fall asleep because of the music stuck in his head. He was devoted to his mother, and at age four he and his sister composed a song for her. Her death when he was fourteen was a huge blow to him.
Early works
Fatum and Romeo and Juliet that he wrote in 1869 were the first works to show the style he became famous for.

69. Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky
To regret the past, and hope for the future, never satisfied with the present that is my life passes. Piotr Il'ich tchaikovsky.
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~boris/maha/music/tchaikovsky.html
Back to the Music Page "To regret the past, and hope for the future, never satisfied with the present: that is my life passes." Piotr Il'ich Tchaikovsky. T chaikovsky was not a child prodigy as Mozart, he did not appear as a great talent during his young years - nether as a pianist, nor as a composer. His life in music was not smooth and predictable. Tchaikovsky is regarded as the most popular Russian composer, and even "the most Russian" composer, though he was not like Glinka consecrated to the service of nationality, and no doubt was influenced by German, Italian and French composers. Even among the other quite famous Russian contemporaries, "The Mighty Five", as they are known , he stays aside: his music was considered too Western, though it had been written at the rising time of the national movement. T chaikovsky was born in a middle class family of a mine inspector. From the early years his life was filled with melodies from Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donicetti, played on the orcestrina by his father. The boy, very likely taught piano by his mother, showed the perfect pitch and remarkable musical memory. But his parents did not pay attention to his musical capabilities. One time, however, once, he was so engaged with a rhythm, tapping with his fingers on the windowpane that he broke the window, cutting his hand. This incident moved his parents to engage a music tutor for young Piotr.

    Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich
Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich key The son of a mining inspector, Tchaikovsky studied music as a child. At 19 he became a government clerk and at 21 entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied composition with Anton Rubinstein. He graduated in 1865 and taught theory and composition at Nicholas Rubinstein's Moscow Conservatory from 1865 to 1878. An annuity from his wealthy patroness, Mme von Meck (whom he never met though he corresponded with her for 14 years and dedicated his Fourth Symphony to her in 1878), made it possible for him to devote himself entirely to composition. Tchaikovsky wrote 11 operas, four concertos, six symphonies, a great number of songs and short piano pieces, three ballets, three string quartets, suites and symphonic poems, and numerous other works. His compositions sustained him throughout his continuous battle with his own nature. In 1877 Tchaikovsky made a disastrous marriage in order to defeat the torment of his homosexuality and to deny the spreading rumors of it. His work was again his consolation when Mme van Meck terminated her friendship and support without apparent reason. Tchaikovsky was opposed to the aims of the Russian nationalist composers and used Western European forms and idioms, although his work instinctively reflects the Russian temperament. His orchestration is rich, and his music is melodious, intensely emotional, and often melancholy.
