7. Janos Solyom -- Sounds Of Defiance
Profile with sketch, note of rights for a composition, and highlights of his career and his death under the Nazis.
http://www.solyom.com/defiance.html#ullmann
Had it not been for that most legendary of Swedes, honorary US citizen Raoul Wallenberg, little Janos from Budapest, Hungary would have been dead by the age of six. Half a century later the King and Queen of Sweden watched their country's leading concert pianist, Janos Solyom, perform in the ornate City Hall of Stockholm, venue of the famed Nobel Prize banquets. Together with the Swedish Government and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps they listened to music written in Terezin (Theresienstadt), that weirdest of concentration camps, a "paradise-ghetto" created by the Nazis to fool the world. Music resurrected
Mr. Solyom's revival of Czech-Jewish composers Pavel Haas Gideon Klein and Viktor Ullmann , all victims of the Holocaust, turned out to be a milestone in Scandinavian musical life, and a major media event at that. Representing the best of mainstream 20th century piano music, these murdered composers are the missing link between Mahler and Messiaen, a link that the Nazis wanted to eradicate from the memory of Man. Their music is a shattering testimony of despair and hope, and of their belief in culture as the ultimate saviour. Memorial concerts

Siglind Bruhn:
Viktor Ullmann Centennial
The composer Viktor Ullmann After 1933, his professional life turned increasingly difficult. He eventually returned to Prague, where he made a living by giving private piano lessons and writing music criticism. In 1942, he and his family were taken to the concentration camp of Terezin, where he continued to compose and, ironically, created some of his most beatuiful works. On 16 October 1944, however, shortly before the ghetto premiere of his opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis, he was transported, along with his family and many of his fellow musicians, to Auschwitz, were most of them perished in the gas chambers.

Biography

Viktor Ullmann was born on 1 January 1898 in Teschen, the modern Cieszyn or Cesky Tesin. Both his parents were from families of Jewish descent, but had converted to Roman Catholicism before Viktor's birth. His father, Maximilian, was able as an assimilated Jew to pursue the career of a professional officer in the army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; in World War I he was promoted to colonel and ennobled.
From 1909 Viktor attended a grammar school (Gymnasium) in Vienna. His musical talents and inclinations soon gave him access to Arnold Schnberg and his circle of pupils. As soon as he had finished school he volunteered for military service.
After deployment on the Italian Front, at Isonzo, he was granted study leave, which he used to obtain an introduction to the study of law at Vienna University. At the beginning of 1918 he was also accepted in Schnberg's composition seminar. With Schnberg himself he studied the theory of form, counterpoint and orchestration. Ullmann was an excellent pianist, although he had no ambitions for a career as a soloist.
In May 1919 he broke off both courses of study and left Vienna in order to devote himself fully to music in Prague. His mentor was now Alexander von Zemlinsky, under whose direction he was conductor at the New German Theatre of Prague (now the Prague State Opera) until 1927. (In the following season, 1927-28, he was appointed head of the opera company in Aussig an der Elbe (st nad Labem), but his repertoire (including operas by Richard Strauss, Krenek and others) was too advanced for local tastes, and the appointment was terminated).

17. Terezin Chamber Music Foundation - History
The Terezin Chamber Music Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to assuring the permanence of the music written by composers who perished in the Holocaust.
http://www.terezinmusic.org/terezin/history/
"Entartete Musik" was the label given by the Nazis to a wide variety of composers and musical genres as part of their propaganda machine. "Entartete" or "degenerate" signified something abnormal about the arts that was perceived as a threat to German society. The music targeted was enormously varied, as were the lives and backgrounds of the composers. The "target" criteria established by the Nazis included either elements of jazz, atonal music, or most insidiously and specifically, any music written by Jewish composers. By highlighting the legacies of these artists, TCMF works toward several important goals. Our archives and research encourage and assist scholarship in musicology and Holocaust studies. TCMF concerts and recordings insure that this repertoire will find its place in the performance repertoire for future generations of artists and audiences. Perhaps most important is the social legacy of these artists. Their music and history are powerful tools in the ongoing struggle against racism and intolerance. Philadelphia Orchestra Performs Music Composed at Terezin
"Against All Odds"
This season the Philadelphia Orchestra has programmed music written by Holocaust victims.
by Alex Ross
(Source: THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA STAGEBILL , Fall 1994, pp. 24-33)
"Entertainment," a drawing of a cabaret performance at Terezin, by Bedrich Fritta, who was incarcerated at the camp. One of the most forceful tributes an orchestra could make to the multitudes who died or were killed in the Second World War would be to announce a season's programming with blank slots scattered through it at random: nine minutes of silence here, an empty half-hour there, one or two concerts in which nothing happens after intermission. These gaps would represent the music that was not written: the brilliant overtures, the beloved concertos, the major symphonic statements of those who died as middle-aged men or as young women, the undiscovered forms of those who were never born. Such an extreme action would, of course, be impractical. This season, the Philadelphia Orchestra has found another effective way to commemorate those lost in the Holocaust: by programming the music of Pavel Haas and Viktor Ullmann, two composers who completed a handful of memorable works in their mid-40s while being held at the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. The two were sent together to Auschwitz 50 years ago, on October 16, 1944.
