Beyond Stockhausen
Kevin Volans
by FUJISHIMA Yutaka
(lecturer of psychology and contemporary music)
After studying with STOCKHAUSEN, Kevin VOLANS broke from the composer and attempted to stake out new musical territory. FUJISHIMA Yutaka discusses his meeting with Volans, and shares some thoughts on his electronic sounds. The delicacy one senses in his compositions is not merely an attempt to pursue self-identity, but arises from Volans' desire for perfection in his work.
In the fourth part of this series, the author deals with Volans as the composer who completely changed his conception of electronic music.
Stockhausen at Expo '70
I first heard Stockhausen's live electronic music at Expo '70 in Osaka; the German pavilion was built especially for it. At the time, Stockhausen, the composer of numerous live electronic and multi-channel compositions, had advocated the construction of halls for electronic music. The spherical pavilion at the Expo was the result of this. When I entered the building, I found Stockhausen seated in front of a mixing board positioned higher than the audience. I no longer remember in detail the music he played, but what impressed me was the way the sound moved in space, the voice of the soprano coming from such a high place ( ), and Stockhausen and the players bowing to the audience from an even higher position.

Kevin Volans
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Kevin Volans is a composer associated with the post-minimalist movement in contemporary composition. He was born in Pietermaritzburg South Africa on July 6, 1949, and even though he has spent most of his life outside his native country, is the best known South African composer active today. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg with a Bachelor of Music degree, followed by post-graduate education at the University of Aberdeen . From 1973 to 1981 he lived in Cologne, where he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Musikhochschule. During this period he served as Stockhausen's teaching assistant in 1975–76 (Taylor 2001). During this period of time, along with his contemporaries Walter Zimmermann and Clarence Barlow , he became associated with the musical movement called the " New Simplicity " that would later influence post-minimalist composition. This was a reaction against the complexities and hyperbole of the new music scene in Germany in the mid-1970s, and it proved to be highly influential. citation needed After conducting several field recording trips in 1979, Volans began writing pieces based upon African compositional techniques. This characteristic made him one of the most distinctive composers on the European new music circuit at the time. Some of his works such as

Michael Dungan talks to the composer Kevin Volans. This article was originally published in New Music News , September 1997. Freedom and Rebellion THIS month's BBC Music Magazine presents a list of more than two hundred and fifty individuals in a Who's Who of classical music. Among the seventy composers listed is one Irish composer and it's not Kevin Volans . (It's Gerald Barry , former classmate and a friend for over twenty-five years). Volans is on the list but, crucially, representing South Africa, the country of his birth in 1949.
Kevin Volans
Photo: Peter McKenzie Mischievously curious about omissions, modest about his own inclusion and mildly amused by some of the categories within the composer list when I showed it to him, a stronger response is provoked from Kevin Volans by the fact that he is listed as South African and not Irish. 'I have lived here for over ten years. I am an Irish citizen. I am Irish. I left South Africa it's the one country in the world where my music isn't performed.' The influence on Volans of his upbringing in South Africa was more cultural and geographical than musical. 'You grow up feeling European. South Africa is simply so isolated that it tends to overcompensate in terms of education and in servicing an extreme thirst for knowledge from Europe. For example, in Johannesburg we had a better record shop for contemporary music than I've ever come across anywhere else. And we had fabulous concert series: Stockhausen came, Stravinsky was there, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, and so on. More recently, I've just marked a thesis by a South African student on the complete works of Morton Feldman and it's the best piece of work on Feldman I've seen from anywhere in the world, which is very typical. Because of the geographical isolation, everyone knows that nothing is going to land in your lap and you have to make a big effort and work hard. But the natural assumption is that you will eventually go to Europe.'

DOMUS AND KEMUS COLLABORATE ON VOLANS CELEBRATIONS In 2009, with the collaboration of Professor Christine Lucia, DOMUS applied for and obtained a National Research Foundation KIC Grant to host a morning symposium and lunch in celebration of the sixtieth birthday of composer Kevin Volans. Extraordinary Professor in the Department of Music, Christine Lucia, convened the symposium programme consisting of contributions by Prof. Jean-Pierre de la Porte (Institute for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Infrastructure in Johannesburg), Jill Richards (pianist), Theo Herbst (University of Stellenbosch) and Mark Brand (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University). The symposium was compellingly introduced by Lucia, who has been working on a Volans book for some years. Symposium proceedings on Sunday 16 August were preceded by a KEMUS White Man Sleeps DOMUS obtained enough KIC funding from the NRF to help sponsor a special edition of the accredited journal SAMUS ( South African Music Studies ) of the South African Society for Research in Music SASRIM ), which will be based on proceedings from the symposium and will be dedicated to Kevin Volans.
