Weber's operas Der Freischütz Euryanthe and Oberon greatly influenced the development of the Romantic opera in Germany. His compositions for the clarinet , which include two concertos, a concertino, a quintet and a duo concertante, are regularly performed today. His piano music—including four sonatas, two concertos and the Konzertstück (Concert Piece) in F minor —influenced composers such as Frédéric Chopin Franz Liszt and Felix Mendelssohn . The Konzertstück provided a new model for the one-movement concerto in several contrasting sections (such as Liszt's, who often played the work), and was acknowledged by Igor Stravinsky as the model for his Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra Weber's Invitation to the Dance was later orchestrated by Hector Berlioz and his Polacca Brillante was later orchestrated by Franz Liszt . Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) Clarinet Quintet in B Flat Major op. 34 (1815) Der Freischutz has eleven themes that appear and reappear throughout the opera; Euryanthe , eight. Weber, more than any composer before his time, realized the importance of the recitative and assigned to it an all-important role in the framework of his operas. He used the orchestra symphonically, making it the spine and backbone of the opera. Finally, he strove for (and to a certain extent realized) a unity of the arts in the Wagnerian sense. As he himself wrote about Euryanthe : ‘It is a purely dramatic work, which depends for its success solely on the cooperation of the sister arts, and is certain to lose its effect if deprived of their assistance.’" Now, what has this to do with chamber music? The answer is - very little, and, in fact, Weber composed very little chamber music. Excepting his works for solo instrument with piano accompaniment, of which there are six violin sonatas, Weber produced only three chamber music works - The Piano Quartet op 18 (1809) which he titled "Grand Quatour", the

Summary:
For middle school and up, an introduction to the early Romantic German composer.
Background and Influence
Carl Maria von Weber's musical career, like that of Ludwig van Beethoven, came at the beginning of the Romantic era . Although it is not nearly as well-known, Weber's music, like Beethoven's, had a major influence on the course of Romantic music. The German folk opera genre that Weber established would eventually lead to the operas of Wagner; and Weber's highly ornamented, virtuoso-style piano music influenced the styles of Schumann, Liszt, and Chopin. Weber's operas were, of course, influenced by earlier opera, including Mozart's, but Weber also had a strong sense that he was creating a new, distinctly German, tradition. Weber's melodies often have the flavor of German folk song. And his

Weber's melodies often have the flavor of German folk song. And his librettos (texts) and plots were strongly influenced by Romantic-era German literature. His operas are stories of good and evil taken from local legends and fairy tales. The characters are of humble origin, and their fates are affected both by nature - a powerful element of mystery and danger - and the supernatural, both favorite subjects in Romantic literature.
Biography
Carl Maria von Weber was born in Eutin (near Lubeck) on November 18th, 1786. The "von" was an affectation; his family was not really aristocracy. His mother was a singer. His father, who was Kapellmeister for a prince bishop and then director of a travelling theatre company, was determined that Carl should be a musical prodigy like Mozart. So young Weber's youth was spent on tour. At age four he could not yet walk properly, because of a congenital disease of the hip, but he could already sing and play piano. He first published a composition at age eleven.
