Weill, Kurt
(b . March 2, 1900, Dessau, Ger.d. April 3, 1950, New York City), German composer who created a revolutionary kind of opera of sharp social satire. Der Protagonist (one act, libretto by Georg Kaiser, 1926) and Royal Palace (1927), established his position, with Ernst Krenek and Paul Hindemith, as one of Germany's most promising young opera composers. His first collaboration with Bertolt Brecht was on the musical comedy Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny ("Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny"), which was a at the Baden-Baden festival in 1927; it sharply satirized life in an imaginary American town. Die Dreigroschenoper The Threepenny Opera ), also with Brecht in 1928, was a transposition of John Gay's Beggar's Opera, with the 18th-century thieves, highwaymen, jailers, and their doxies turned into typical characters in the Berlin underworld of the 1920s; it established both the topical opera and the reputations of composer and librettist. Weill's music was in turn harsh and hauntingly melancholy. The libretto was soon translated into 11 languages. Mahagonny was elaborated as a full-length opera and first presented in Dresden in 1930. Widely considered his masterpiece, its music showed a skillful synthesis of American popular-ragtime-jazz music. Weill's wife, the actress Lotte

Born March 2, 1900, in Dessau, Weill studied with the composers Ferruccio Busoni and Engelbert Humperdinck. With the German poet-dramatist Bertolt Brecht he created a new form of musical theater in two satiric-didactic, musically brilliant works, both of which won international acclaim: Die Dreigroschenoper (1928; Eng. production, The Threepenny Opera, 1954), a modern paraphrase of The Beggar's Opera (1728) by the British writer John Gay; and Aufsteig und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (1929; Eng. production, Mahagonny, 1970). Weill's works were banned as subversive in Germany, and he went with his wife, the actor Lotte Lenya (1898-1981), first to Paris (1933-35) and then to the U.S. (1935). For the Broadway musical theater he composed Knickerbocker Holiday Lady in the Dark (1941), and

More popular than these, however, was his melodious Dreigroschenoper (1928), a modern version of John Gay's Beggar's Opera, with book by Bertolt Brecht . Translated and adapted by Marc Blitzstein as The Threepenny Opera, it was first produced in New York City in 1933; revived in 1954, it ran for more than six years and has become one of the classics of the musical stage. Brecht was also the librettist of Weill's satiric opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny [rise and fall of the city Mahagonny] (1927; revised and expanded 1930). All these works were condemned as decadent by the rising followers of Hitler, and, in 1933, Weill left Germany for France. In 1935 he emigrated to the United States, where he began writing sophisticated musicals, the most notable being Johnny Johnson Knickerbocker Holiday (1938; written with Maxwell

b Dessau, 2 March 1900
d New York, 3 April 1950, aged fifty
He was born of a Jewish family. His early music studies were with Bing and Humperdinck; then he became coach and conductor for the opera companies in Dessau and Ludenscheid. In 1921 he settled in Berlin and studied with Busoni for three years; then began his great collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. In 1933, with Hitler in power, Weill and his wife escaped to Paris, and they were quite penniless until he worked again with Brecht and received a commission to write a symphony. Unfortunately, the symphony was poorly received; his music was banned in Germany and copies of his scores were destroyed. After a brief stay in London he went to the USA, where his success was assured. He died of a heart attack. Symphony No 1 Fantasie, Passacaglia and Hymn, for orchestra
