All Film Composers John Williams - composer extraordinaire John Williams should need little introduction since he is almost certainly the most well-known film composer, and possibly to many people the best-known composer, period. Born in New York, Williams started out doing television work composing for Irwin Allen shows like "Lost in Space", "Time Tunnel" and "Land of the Giants". His first brush with Hollywood was as a pianist. During the Golden Age of Hollywood Cinema, he worked as a pianist and arranger with film music luminaries such as Alfred Newman Franz Waxman Bernard Herrmann , and later Henry Mancini . With such exposure to the industry, and the encouragement of Newman in particular, Williams made the transition into film composition. Early steps in that direction found Williams again working for Irwin Allen, when he came to do a series of popular disaster movies including "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Towering Inferno". One particular early success was his first Oscar (of five currently) for his adaptation of Jerry Bock's music for the stage musical "Fiddler on the Roof". Williams also conducted and provided the incidental music for the film, and the part of the fiddler himself was played by violinist Isaac Stern.

What's New JOHN NICHOLS FAMILY SOCIETY Descendants of John Nichols, Australian First Fleet Convict Scarborough - First Fleet Ship John Nichols' transport to his new home John Nichols was born in 1755. In 1784 he was tried at the Old Bailey court in London for stealing hairdressing goods. He was was found guilty and sentenced to seven years transportation to Africa. Whilst waiting for his departure John was housed on the prison hulk Censor. Because of problems with the penal colony in Africa, Johns destination was changed to Botany Bay and he eventually set sail on the Scarborough, one of the First Fleet ships, on 13 May 1787. The First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. Ann Pugh arrived in Sydney Cove on board the Earl Cornwallis on 12 June 1801. Ann had been found guilty of stealing and sentenced to seven years transportation. (Read a transcript of Ann's trial) By 1802 Ann was living with John. They married on 26 August 1803. They had Twelve children before John died on 24 December 1822. Ann passed away on 10 July 1849.

He was the son of Henry Bankes of Kingston Hall (later to be known as Kingston Lacy), Dorset, and the former Frances Woodley (who gave birth to five other children). William was educated at Westminster School from the age of nine and, from 1803 on, at Trinity College in Cambridge where he obtained his BA in 1808 and his MA in 1811. When his elder brother was lost at sea in a shipwreck in 1806, William John Bankes became heir to the house and its estates. Like the lifelong friend he made at Trinity College, Lord Byron, who was two years Bankes's junior, he inherited his title by chance circumstance. Both were not only wealthy but also competitive, witty and extravagant, in short byronesque personalities. Although not aristocratic, the Bankes family were leading gentry, educated, traveled, cultured and represented the family seat in Parliament. They were wealthy landowners in Dorset and augmented their income substantially from their control of a graphite mine in Cumberland. William John Bankes embellished Kingston Lacy by continuing a family tradition of collecting major paintings, objects, furniture and by commissioning bronzes.
