April 9, 1754, Halle, Prussia), philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who worked in many subjects but who is best known as the German spokesman of the Enlightenment, the 18th-century philosophical movement characterized by Rationalism. Wolff was educated at the universities of Breslau, Jena, and Leipzig and was a pupil of the philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. On the recommendation of Leibniz he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Halle in 1707, but he was banished in 1723 as a result of theological disputes with Pietists, who were followers of the German movement for an increase of piety in Lutheran churches. He became professor of mathematics and philosophy at the University of Marburg, Hesse (1723-40), and, as science adviser to Peter the Great (1716-25), helped found the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in Russia. After returning to the University of Halle, at the request of the king of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, he became chancellor (1741-54). What kind of effect do you think that had on your work? All kinds of effect! (laughs) Practically, he was my first and only composition teacher. He taught me a handful of practical things and then he basically let me go ahead on my own. Our lessons lasted for about six weeks. He taught me about rhythmic structure, Webern, did some counterpoint exercises and that was it basically. After that, I was doing my own pieces. I would make up my own systems for my pieces and he figured that was good enough. I didn't have to go on with counterpoint or other peoples' systems as long as I knew systems and knew how to work with it. That was the point. PSF: Did you find shortcomings with counter point? To tell the truth, I wasn't very good at it and he wasn't very interested. That's somewhat ironic because over the last ten years, I've become very interested in it and I've used it all the time in one form or another. His corpus includes over 26 titles, spanning more than 42 quarto volumes, with contributions primarily in the areas of mathematics and philosophy. He is often regarded as the central historical figure who links the philosophical systems of Leibniz and Kant. Although Wolff's influence was largely isolated to German schools and universities during and shortly after his lifetime, he did receive some international acclaim. He was a nonresident member of all four major European scientific academies: the Royal Society of London in 1709; the Berlin Academy in 1711; the St Petersburg Academy in 1725; and the Paris Academy in 1733.
