Scribus: Open Source Desktop Publishing
by Howard Wen
Sometimes putting words to paper requires more than just a word processor. For designing and publishing newsletters, magazines, catalogs, and other printed pages that feature fonts (and graphics, photographs, or other images), a page layout application works best. Scribus is such a solution for Linux. While there are other desktop publishing (DTP) applications for Linux , based mostly on TeX and LaTex , Scribus sports a friendlier user interface and more features. In fact, it has evolved into a worthy competitor to the print industry's premier layout programs for the PC and Mac: PageMaker and QuarkXPress. Its development has also helped to advance the use of font typefaces and color management on Linux. Notable features of Scribus version 1.2, released in August 2004, include:
  • A robust, commercial-grade PDF export engine with capabilities exceeded only by Adobe's own Acrobat 6.0 Professional.

Your Guide To Desktop Publishing
Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing was first created in the mid-1980’s with the introduction of PageMaker – the brainchild of Paul Brainerd and the Aldus Corporation. These people wanted to create a product that was affordable but still have the ability for users to create a product that could compete with the high-end expensive products.
Planning ahead is key to using desktop publishing correctly. Knowing ahead of time what you want to create and how you are going to create it is very important. There are a number of different desktop publishing programs on the market today, some of which allow you to more things than others. It is essential that you have the right program for what you are planning to do and there are several ways to find out what you need. You could begin by researching these different publishing programs to find out what they are capable of doing. If you have access to a publishing company, you want to ask a professional for some advice.
Even though you create a product on your own using a desktop publishing program, it is a good idea to print your final product with a printing company. This will ensure that you are getting the best quality. Always proofread your final copy before printing. There is nothing worse than spending a great deal of time, effort and money on printing only to find that you need to make corrections and print all over again.

Desktop publishing a guide to software and services.

Desktop Publishing
Yes, in place of a proper desktop-publishing package, you can design the pages of your book with a word-processing package, and run off the camera-ready copy from your laser printer. But you'll have limited control over complicated layouts, and even small changes can be time-consuming.
DTP: Word Processors
Packages like Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect include formatting facilities (fonts, line spacing, paragraphing, etc.), spell- and grammar-checkers-checkers but the page layout is fairly basic. They will serve for simple booklets but not book-length documents with more than text. Problems arise when you need to flow text around complicated arrangements, add appendices and make changes quickly. Not all commercial printers accept their file formats.
DTP: Page Layout Programs
This is desktop publishing proper, and the programs allow for the integration of text and images on the page, easy manipulation of page elements, creation of artistic layouts and multi-page publications such as newsletters and books. High-end features include separations, imposition, and fine typographic controls. Not all are expensive and difficult to learn. Some suggestions: Home Publishing: The Print Shop, Sierra Print Artist

Desktop Publishing Szu-chia Wang (Editor: Veronique Autphenne) Can you image how to do all the papers without the word-processing software Microsoft’s Word? Or drawing a three-dimension graphic with lots of statistics by hand? While it is so common for most of us to use computers handling our writing assignments, one decade earlier the same quality of outputs would involve several processes (typing, composing, calibrating), would take at least a couple of days, and would be expensive. Desktop publishing, which simplifies the once-complicated publishing process and technique, enables non-professionals to produce primary printing by themselves and also helps professional publishers to save money and time. Not surprisingly, the wide acceptance of desktop publishing technology has had an incredible impact on the publishing industry as well as on our everyday lives. In short, it has accelerated the dissemination of diverse information because of the low cost of production. The primary drive of the communication field relates to the capabilities of novel transmitting channels and receivers, such as the Internet and web, and the development of desktop publishing technology is one catalyst in this change. It makes everyone able to post their work on the web, which enriches the media and motivates people to get on line. Therefore, we need to take a closer look at this technology in order to understand the trends in the communication industry. TECHNOLOGY: EVERYBODY CAN PUBLISH A BOOK Desktop publishing is defined as a tool which makes ‘… it possible to create newsletters, reports, even books…’ (Levine 1997:157). In other words, with a personal computer and appropriate software, people can generate a book from anywhere.

Desktop Publishing
The process of desktop publishing has been made easier by the introduction of the personal computers in the mid-80s.Utilizing the software capabilities of PCs was the arrival of laser printers and "letter quality" type and views. Desktop publishing blends text and graphics into an aesthetic format called layout. Layouts can be "pasted" together on computer, and then printed on printer, using basic instructions and procedures. Any variety of documents can be produced using desktop publishing, including books, magazines, newsletters, brochures, and pamphlets. Embedding graphics into these publications is an art, and has become a hobby to many.

Beginning from early illuminated pages in hand-copied books of the Middle Ages and proceeding down to intricate modern magazine and catalog layouts, proper page design has long been a consideration in printed material. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die laser cutting foil stamping or blind embossing Since the advent of personal computing , page layout skills have expanded to electronic media as well as print media.
