In only 15 years, the power of personal computers has increased by a factor of nearly one-thousand. By all accounts, it will increase by another factor of one-thousand in the next 15 years. This tremendous power has changed the way science and engineering is done, and there is no better example of this than Digital Signal Processing. In the early 1980s, DSP was taught as a graduate level course in electrical engineering. A decade later, DSP had become a standard part of the undergraduate curriculum. Today, DSP is a basic skill needed by scientists and engineers in many fields. Unfortunately, DSP education has been slow to adapt to this change. Nearly all DSP textbooks are still written in the traditional electrical engineering style of detailed and rigorous mathematics. DSP is incredibly powerful, but if you can't understand it, you can't use it! Digital Signal Processing is distinguished from other areas in computer science by the unique type of data it uses: signals. In most cases, these signals originate as sensory data from the real world: seismic vibrations, visual images, sound waves, etc. DSP is the mathematics, the algorithms, and the techniques used to manipulate these signals after they have been converted into a digital form. This includes a wide variety of goals, such as: enhancement of visual images, recognition and generation of speech, compression of data for storage and transmission, etc. Suppose we attach an analog-to-digital converter to a computer and use it to acquire a chunk of real world data. DSP answers the question: What next?

Compressive Imaging: A New Single-Pixel Camera Compressive Sensing is an emerging field based on the revelation that a small group of non-adaptive linear projections of a compressible signal or image contains enough information for reconstruction and processing. Our new digital image/video camera directly acquires random projections of a scene without first collecting the pixels/voxels. The camera architecture employs a digital micromirror array to optically calculate linear projections of the scene onto pseudorandom binary patterns. Its key hallmark is its ability to obtain an image or video with a single detection element (the "single pixel") while measuring the scene fewer times than the number of pixels/voxels. Since the camera relies on a single photon detector, it can also be adapted to image at wavelengths where conventional CCD and CMOS imagers are blind. The DSP group has been actively teaching courses, conducting research, and publishing results since 1968. Justin Romberg named 2010 REA Outstanding Young Alumnus The Rice Engineering Alumni (REA) board of directors recently announced its 2010 awards for Outstanding Engineering Alumnus and Outstanding Young Engineering Alumnus (OYEA). Named OYEA was Justin Romberg, assistant professor in the school of electrical and computer engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, who earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1997, master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1999 and a PhD in 2004, all from Rice University. From Fall 2003 until Fall 2006, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology. He spent the Summer of 2000 as a researcher at Xerox PARC, the Fall of 2003 as a visitor at the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions in Paris, and the Fall of 2004 as a Fellow at UCLA's Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics.
