Emulators are applications which reproduce another, different computer system in software allowing the software from one machine to be run on another. Emulators are used for a wide range of purposes. For example, OS X provides emulation on x86 computers to allow old PowerPC binaries to be run. Microsoft provide an ARM PDA emulator for testing applications without having to repeatedly copy things onto a device. One of the most popular uses for emulators however is to play video games from older (or in some exceptional circumstances, current) systems on modern hardware (generally PCs but the Pandora, GP2X, GP32 and PSP are also popular platforms for running emulators). Nintendo sells a number of official emulators through its Virtual Console service for the Wii.

Pandora and emulators
One of the popular uses for the Pandora is to run emulators of old video games systems (though some old home computers and calculators are also emulated). The Pandora is suited to this task because it has a fairly standard control layout similar (or almost identical to) the layouts of the input devices of the systems it emulates. Furthermore, it has an LCD of resolution 800x480, which is large enough to accommodate most older systems without any downscaling. Of course, it is also portable meaning you can play these games whenever and wherever you want without having to carry a TV, machine and collection of cartridges.

Testing on Mobile Devices using Emulators
With mobile devices becoming more and more popular each year, it is about time for the state-of-the-art Web Developer to not only test the sites he is building on a desktop/laptop computer, but also on mobile phones and PDAs. But there are so many out there! Do you need to buy each and every model to be able to test? Well, for a start device emulators can give you a helping hand. For a couple of years we have heard from experts that using mobile devices for using the Internet will become increasingly popular and will move peoples using habits away from the desktop and into the mobile world. Apart from Japan, this is not quite true yet. Mobile devices such as PDAs, cell phones and pocket computers are getting more and more popular and feature-rich, but it still seems quite tedious to browse web sites on small screens with limited interaction capabilities. Apple with its iPhone has done a great job and we can only hope that others will follow in terms of anticipating how users would like to use a mobile device and which features would help them in doing so.

Caprice 32 V1.11 Caprice32 is a 32bit DOS based emulator by Ulrich Doewich and in my opinion the best available for DOS/Win9X PC's. It's also the only DOS emulator to support the Romantic Robot Multiface ROM which when coupled with Insider makes up for the current lack of an inbuilt disassembler. This beta Version of Caprice V2 is the last DOS emulator that Ulrich Doewich has written, he has now started work on Caprice V3 which takes the developments of V2 and ports them into the Windows environment CPCEmu 1.5 CPC-Emu is written by Marco Veith and is a stable emulator with some useful utilites included.
It's not the most powerful of the emulators but it's inbuilt disassembler is quite good.
CPC-Emu has had no new development work for a number of years so lacks the power of modern emulators. CPE 5.2 CPE was written by Bernnd Schmidt and due to the fact that is written entirely in Assembler it is faster than CPC-EMU and handles things like overscan a lot better.
CPE has excellent sound emulation as well as built in .ZIP support and is an ideal emulator for owners of lower spec PC's.

P op V it ArcEm is a register level emulator of the Acorn Archimedes A4x0 system based around the ARM microprocessor. It is distributed with ARM Linux binaries and will boot ARM Linux and Acorn's RISC OS 3.1. It runs under X, Win32, and RISC OS. It is based on the release of the ARM emulator core by ARM Ltd, although this has been heavily modified for the emulation. It is a reasonably accurate register level emulation and as such should run pretty much anything.
