Last weekend, Marcus of interactive-matter and I, gave a small introduction into internet of things and ambient devices at the Good School . The idea was to have two devices that show the current volume of two terms on twitter, e.g. love against hate . The demo should show how easy it is to connect the physical world to the internets. Marcus did the software part, so if you are interested in that, visit interactive-matter . I did the hardware part, if you want see that, just read on. Tags: ambient devices internet of things
    Tiny Proto Boards
    September 3rd, 2010 avr
Here are two brand new boards for faster prototyping. These are especially useful for these one-off projects that need to be more permanent than on a breadboard. And they save time as most of the standard components as reset button or ISP header are already on board. Only the custom part of the project has to be soldered on the proto area. They come in two flavors, one for ATtiny25 and one for ATtiny2313 Atmel microcontrollers. Even a 3 AA cell battery holder with on/off switch is included in the kit. There also two new how-tos with detailed step-by-step instructions

In terms of graphics, .hack//INFECTION boasts impressively anime-comparable models that each sport stylish designs. Responsible for this is the renowned character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, whose resume shines with such past successes as Neon Genesis Evangelion and "FLCL". Remarkably enough, the characters look almost identical on paper as they did rendered in 3-D, making the game all the more believable in terms of feel and all the more enjoyable from a visual standpoint, as it was like actually playing an anime. It's amazing what a little smooth texturing will do for a guy. Even facial expressions such as the bubbly "^_^" face make an appearance in the game. Attention to detail is tight, and noteworthy. The dungeon designs are slick and interesting enough to keep the player from lapsing into a deep slumber. This is especially surprising, considering the enormous amount of dungeons able to be generated. It goes without saying, however, that many dungeons share the same design and textures that others do. In the main menu, all of Kite's skills and items can be found and selected from to perform, such as whatever attack skill your current weapon gives you, or a list of magic scrolls in your inventory. When one of the aforementioned menus is opened, gameplay freezes, as if turn-based, and allows you to take your time while navigating these menus. While that can often save you in a near-death situation, it takes away from the fluidity of the game. Especially when you must use multiple instances of, say, a healing item, and you pop the window open and close several times in a row.

Due October 2002 for PlayStation 2. Videogame otaku and RPG fans mark this in your book: "Get .hack." That’s "dot hack," a new action RPG from Bandai. But this is not your typical action RPG. In a major turn towards blurring the line between reality and fantasy, .hack centers around a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) called The World. Of course, there is no real MMORPG called The World, and .hack does not utilize the soon-to-be online capabilities of the PS2. It’s a wonderfully bizarre premise, and with a strong grounding in A-list anime production, it could be the coolest RPG to hit the market this year. .hack combines standard action RPG gameplay with a whole bunch of other stuff. You’ll interface with the game (which is the "real world" for Kite and his friends) and The World interchangeably. You’ll have to read email, hang out in chat rooms, interact with other players in The World, etc. By interacting with other players (of course, these are all non-player characters) you collect clues that will help you progress and open up new areas of The World to explore. All of this skipping from reality to reality leads to some innovative and energetic gameplay.

Original source distribution with release commentary and history.

Hack
In 1985 I distributed a game called hack Now that CWI has allowed free redistribution of this game, I have made an attempt to reconstruct the original sources. There is a tape but nobody seems to have functioning tape readers anymore.
Hack 1.0
In December 1984 I distributed Hack 1.0 in the newsgroup net.sources. The sender was play@mcvax.UUCP (funhouse) . The announcement promised 10 parts but in fact there were 15 pieces, all sent out on 17-Dec-84.
net.games.hack
The game was very popular - a newsgroup net.games.hack was created by Gene Spafford, who announced There has been an incredible amount of traffic generated by users (and abusers) of the "hack" game recently posted to the net. I have just created the newsgroup "net.games.hack" for that traffic. Please stop posting articles about "hack" to "net.games" and "net.games.rogue" and use this new group instead. We now resume the disaster, already in progress.
Hack 1.0.1
In January 1985 a patch was sent out adding a few features. The sender was play@turing.UUCP

    RevivedHack
Hack, the ancestor of NetHack , was created in 1982 by Jay Fenlason with the assistance of Kenny Woodland, Mike Thome, and Jonathan Payne. It was inspired by Rogue , and was intended to be an improved version of it. Apparently, the original source code didn't survive, and only derivatives of it exist. One such derivation was Andries Brouwer's Hack, which was posted to Usenet in December of 1984. Brouwer released versions 1.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, and finally 1.0.3 for the UNIX operating system. They were distributed through Usenet as complete source code or patches against a previous version. They were later ported to MS-DOS (PC Hack) and Amiga. Version 1.0.3 is currently distributed with operating systems in the BSD family. Don Kneller's port of Hack 1.0.3, PC Hack 3.61, is the basis of RevivedHack, which integrates his bug fixes and most of his changes. For this updated port I added color, support for graphical tiles and sound effects, and new saved game and message display code. I also collected bug reports from old newsgroup messages, and fixed those bugs, as well as others I found while playtesting. Download
