T he Information Revolution is changing our world in myriad ways. But is it a change for the better? Will advances in computer technology strengthen democratic values or destroy them? Enhance personal freedom or enslave us? Solve the world's problems or create new ones? Technomanifestos , in book and online form, sets out to answer these questions by investigating the primary sourcesthe seminal but seldom-read texts that form the philosophical foundation of the Digital Age. From artificial intelligence to nanotechnology cybernetics to the World Wide Web , they chart a fascinating course through the history of ideas in the latter half of the twentieth century. The book explores the triumphs and tragedies of such visionaries as Norbert Wiener Doug Engelbart Ted Nelson Richard Stallman , and K. Eric Drexler . They emerge as a lively group of radical thinkers, deeply committed to civil liberties, personal empowerment, and participatory democracy. This book places technological advances into broader social and political contexts, tracing their impact on work education law , and media The online network illuminates the intersections of technology and society computers and culture

History of Computers
Computing hardware has been an essential component of the process of calculation and data storage since it became useful for numerical values to be processed and shared.
Even with the incredible evolution of computers over the years, some models that would be considered completely redundant at first glance still serve very useful purposes; for example, the from Hewlett-Packard is, to this very day, still in use for data storage purposes.
The earliest computing hardware was probably some form of tally stick; later recording devices include the Phoenician clay shapes which represented counts of items, probably livestock or grains, in containers. These seem to have been used by the merchants, accountants, and government officials of the time. Devices to aid computation have evolved from simple recording and counting devices through the abacus, the slide rule, and more recent electronic computers. Even today, an experienced abacus user using a device designed hundreds of years ago can sometimes complete basic calculations more quickly than an unskilled person using an electronic calculator - though for more complex calculations, computers out-perform even the most skilled human. This article presents the major developments in the history of computing hardware and attempts to put them in context.

Coda
When I began this blog, I had the idea that it would be an integral part of my critical and reflective technical practice. For the past three years, it has served admirably, providing an easy way to share ideas and code and putting me in touch with a wide range of colleagues and new friends. During that time I've tried to stay true to the promise of "hacks," even if I pushed the boundaries of both "digital" and "history". As my technical work has evolved, however, I've begun to feel like this blog is less and less suited to my day-to-day activities. Rather than try and force it to fit, I've decided to build something new. Posted by William J. Turkel at 3:16 PM

Some Winter Reading for Humanist Makers
In December 2004, I bought a copy of Joe Martin's Tabletop Machining to see what would be involved in learning how to make clockwork mechanisms and automata. It was pretty obvious that I had many years of study ahead of me, but I had just finished my PhD and knew that publishing that would take a few years more. So I didn't mind beginning something else that might take ten or fifteen years to master. Since then, I've been reading steadily about making things, but it wasn't until this past fall that I actually had the chance to set up a small Lab for Humanistic Fabrication and begin making stuff in earnest. Since it's December again, I thought I'd put together a small list of books to help other would-be humanist makers.

[Note:The following is part two of Matt Barton's in-depth series on the history of computer role-playing games. We highly recommend referring to Part One: The Early Years before reading this article!] Welcome back, brave adventurer, to the second part of my history of our favorite genre of computer gamethe Computer Role-Playing Game (the CRPG). Last time , we explored the CRPG's murky precursors, which included tabletop war and sports games like Tactics and Strat-O-Matic. Of course, I also discussed the CRPG's most direct ancestor, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson's game, which itself derived mostly from their earlier fantasy-based strategy game called Chainmail . Since so much of consists of mathematics, programmers realized at once that a considerable bulk of the game was well suited for play on a computer. The first CRPGs appeared on mainframes like the PDP-10 and a special educational platform called PLATO By the early 1980s, these graphically simplistic but technically masterful games had been adapted or ported to almost every home computer on the market

Welcome to Kumamoto Kokufu High School.
    This is the sign of
    KUMAMOTO KOKUFU
    which was written by
    the Chinese character.
We are very glad to connect with Internet and send a greeting message now. Our school was founded in 1941, when there were about 160 students. But now there are about 1500 students(from 10th grade to 12th grade) and 120 teachers and staff. It is coeducational and we have 3 kinds of courses, which are a commercial course, a computer course and a general course. The students of the commercial course study mainly subjects like soroban (abacus), bookkeeping, typing, basic knowledge of business besides Japanese, English, math, science and so on. The students of the computer course study mainly the advanced knowledge and skill on the computer in addition to the above subjects. In the general course, they study Japanese, math, English, science and social studies. Our school started to send e-mails by Venus in 1991. We have communicated with some schools in England, Scotland and Australia.
