Felix Domke, Michael Steil, Free60 Project; 11 August 2009 Dangerous Xbox 360 Update Killing Homebrew On Tuesday, Microsoft has released an Xbox 360 software update that overwrites the first stage bootloader of the system. Although there have been numerous software updates for Microsoft's gaming console in the past, this is the first one to overwrite the vital boot block. Any failure while updating this will break the Xbox 360 beyond repair. Statistics from other systems have shown that about one in a thousand bootloader updates goes wrong, and unless Microsoft has a novel solution to this problem, this puts tens of thousands of Xboxes at risk. It seems that this update is being done to fix a vulnerability already known to the Free60 Project. This vulnerability has been successfully exploited to run arbitrary code, and a complete end user compatible hack has been in development for some time and is planned to be released on free60.org shortly. It will allow users to take back control of their Xboxes and run arbitrary code like homebrew applications or Linux right after turning on the console and without the need of a modchip, finally opening up the Xbox 360 to a level of hacking as the original Xbox. Because of the dangerousness of the update and the homebrew lockout

(ICP) is located on the edge of Staten Island, N.Y., about six miles across the water from Manhattan. As a systems integrator and reseller, the company has the biggest ISO 9001 certified configuration and customization facility in the entire New York City area. ICP's CTO Paul Fabozzi was working on September 11, 2001.
"I received a phone call minutes after the first plane hit. Our main office and configuration center sits on the New York Bay and we had an unobstructed view of the (World Trade Center) buildings on fire. I rushed down to se what was going on ... all the other employees were scared ... those buildings were not supposed to come down." Fabozzi says that in the days following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, ICP got a rush of orders for all kinds of systems. "We had customers that lost office space in those (WTC) buildings. Many disaster recovery plans were not designed for this kind of hit. Many of our customers were forced to bring up new offices right away. (Those) offices need systems, and we sell systems," he says.

Companies pitching Linux to enterprise customers say they're seeing a change in attitude from potential clients in recent months the customers are now asking for Linux instead of getting it sold to them.
Linux specialists at companies such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard, both of which seem to be announcing new Linux conversions weekly, say some of their recent high-profile Linux sales went to customers who specifically asked for Linux. Michael Callahan, CTO and co-founder of

GIMP for Unix
Getting and Installing GIMP
There are various ways to obtain and install GIMP for UNIX systems. In addition to the source code distribution here on www.gimp.org, you can get binaries for various flavors of UNIX. At the moment we know about the following binary packages for GIMP 2.4 or 2.6 on UNIX. These binaries are provided by GIMP users. We did not test them; use at your own risk.
  • GNU/Linux BSD Sun Solaris If you cannot find a pre-compiled package of GIMP 2.6 for your system, you can build and install GIMP from the source code . This is not that hard, so don't be afraid and give it a try.
    Requirements
GIMP runs on most Unix systems using X11 (the X Window System). If your system can run a graphical web browser, chances are that it can also run GIMP. It runs even on relatively old PCs (Pentium 200) or on old workstations (Sun Ultra1). The amount of memory can be an important factor, especially if you intend to work on large images. A minimum of 128 MB of RAM is recommended, but actually you should have 256 MB or more, and several GB does not hurt when you want to edit really large images. In addition to the basic X11 libraries, the following is a list of what you will need to run GIMP on your system:

What better application for an industrial-strength operating system than heavy industry? It isn't making much news in the West, but Linux is on the verge of becoming the dominant platform at many integrated manufacturing companies in East Asia.
Most people familiar with the history of computing can cite a variety of government and industrial applications that drove the early market for computers. The very earliest applications of all involved the automation of industrial processes. In fact, the granddaddy of all "data processing" applications allowed French garment manufacturers to automate the process of creating patterned sweaters back in 1801
In the 1970s and '80s IT pioneers such as Digital Equipment Corp. spawned an entirely new business focused on industrial automation, and heavy industry grew to become an important market for software developers. Over the last 20 years, American enthusiasm for computer assisted industrial control systems

] Ghosts of Unix Past: a historical search for design patterns [Front] Posted Oct 27, 2010 15:20 UTC (Wed) by corbet The exploration of design patterns is importantly a historical search. It is possible to tell in the present that a particular approach to design or coding works adequately in a particular situation, but to identify patterns which repeatedly work, or repeatedly fail to work, a longer term or historical perspective is needed. We benefit primarily from hindsight. Click below (subscribers only) for the first of a four-part series from Neil Brown exploring the history of Unix design patterns in Linux. We're back in Largo, Florida , checking on advances in the Linux-based network they use to run the city's computers that we wrote about last year . True to Largo's "City of Progress" motto, these guys have not been standing still. Now they're talking about Linux-based terminals in all the city's police cars. Microsoft has tried and failed to bring them into the proprietary fold. And, possibly most important, we have an amazing cost figure that ought to make you ask your local politicians why their IT operations aren't as efficient as Largo's.

Linux and the GNU Project
by Richard Stallman For more information see also the GNU/Linux FAQ , and Why GNU/Linux? Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project free software added up to a complete system because the GNU Project had been working since 1984 to make one. In the The GNU Manifesto we set forth the goal of developing a free Unix-like system, called GNU. The Initial Announcement of the GNU Project also outlines some of the original plans for the GNU system. By the time Linux was started, GNU was almost finished. Most free software projects have the goal of developing a particular program for a particular job. For example, Linus Torvalds set out to write a Unix-like kernel (Linux); Donald Knuth set out to write a text formatter (TeX); Bob Scheifler set out to develop a window system (the X Window System). It's natural to measure the contribution of this kind of project by specific programs that came from the project. GNU software But that is not the deepest way to consider the question. The GNU Project was not, is not, a project to develop specific software packages. It was not a project

GBdirect: Leaders in Linux Training and Deployment
We believe that GBdirect is the leading Linux training company in Britain and Europe. We were, for example, amongst the world's first commercial Linux trainers (well before some of the best-known Linux distribution vendors) and we are thoroughly steeped in its practical application. Courses offered in this topic are as indicated ( Open Public Course Closed In-House Course
Expertise and Experience in Linux and Unix
Our Linux trainers have been using the OS since its first stable kernel release (1.0) in 1994. That's hardly surprising given that they include people like Mike Banahan (a pioneer in the technical development and commercial deployment of Unix from the 1970s onward). In 1997, after a long period of testing and evaluation, we knew and trusted the OS well enough to commit our entire head office infrastructure to Linux. Now there is barely a non-Linux machine in the building and some of our staff have never worked on anything else.
