How iPads enter the workforce
Closed Published October 27th, 2010 in CapMac By Ted Schadler, Forrester Research iPad has exploded onto the scene. Who could have imagined that a tablet (a category introduced in 2001) would capture the imagination of employees and IT alike? But it did, and it’s kicked off an arms race for smart mobile devices. Every day, a new tablet appears: Cisco Cius, Dell Streak, Samsung Galaxy Tab, RIM PlayBook, HP Windows 7 Tablet, the list goes on. These post-PC devices will find a place in your company, but where?
We’ve had over 200 conversations with IT customers about iPads and other tablets since January. The interest is incredible. And IT is ahead of the curve on this one, determined not to be playing catchup as happened with employee and executive demand for iPhones. We talk to people every day who are deploying iPads in pilots or experiments. In a new report for Forrester clients, we categorize the ways in which we see tablets entering the workplace:
Displace laptops. This is the classic executive and mobile professional scenario. While it will be some time before tablets replace laptops completely, iPads have proven their value in meeting rooms, on the go, and of course as personal devices. But for now, it means tablets are a third device alongside smartphones and laptops.

Macintosh emulation. First impressions...
Apart from Executor by ARDI there hasn't been a software-only commercial Macintosh emulator on the market (as far as I know). A product called Gemulator requires the physical presence of a small board containing original Macintosh ROMs. (Which means that notebook users as myself can't use such a solution). For the Commodore Amiga an emulator called FUSION by Microcode Solutions has been available for years. This product has now been released for the PC.
The following reflects my first impressions.
FUSION requires no Macintosh hardware; instead it relies on the user to make sure a copy of a legally obtained ROM exists as a file in the FUSION directory (i.e. you should own a Macintosh). The same technique is used by vMac and the same provisions as to the legality of making that file remain; for instance the ROM does contain the string '(c) 1990-1992 Apple Computer, Inc.' . Click here and of US Code 17 seem applicable).
I downloaded the FUSION demo and used the therein supplied utility ROMUTIL to dump the 1 Mb. ROM of my thrusty old

How to Use Filters (Macintosh)
Many e-mail management functions in Eudora can be done automatically using filters. A filter can be thought of as a personal "valet" or "butler" that takes your mail and does certain things to it that you specify. One kind of valet might watch for particular mail from a mailing list and move it into a mailbox, open the message, and play a sound. Another might look for other kinds of mail and give it a label color, a high priority, and a new subject line. In Eudora, there are two ways to create filters - a simple way ( Simple Filter ) and a detailed way ( Detailed Filter
Creating a Simple Filter:
Step 1
Select the e-mail message from which you want a filter to be created. In our example, it is a message from Junior
Step 2 Select Make Filter from the Special menu.
Step 3 Once the Make Filter dialog appears, check the fields to make certain the information is correct. If not, you can modify the information. (For detailed definitions of terms in the above window, check your Users Manual). When you're finished, click

Basilisk II
An Open Source 68k Macintosh Emulator
Quick news
General information
What is Basilisk II?
Basilisk II is an Open Source 68k Macintosh emulator. That is, it allows you to run 68k MacOS software on your computer, even if you are using a different operating system. However, you still need a copy of MacOS and a Macintosh ROM image to use Basilisk II. Basilisk II is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) For more information, see the README file . If you are interested in learning how Basilisk II works internally, there is a Technical Manual available (knowledge about programming and computer architecture is required).
Available ports
Basilisk II has been ported to the following systems:
  • Unix with X11 (Linux i386/x86_64, Solaris 2.5, FreeBSD 3.x, IRIX 6.5)
  • Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel)
  • Windows NT/2000/XP
  • BeOS R4 (PowerPC and Intel)
  • AmigaOS 3.x
Some features of Basilisk II
  • Emulates either a Mac Classic (which runs MacOS 0.x thru 7.5) or a Mac II series machine (which runs MacOS 7.x, 8.0 and 8.1), depending on the ROM being used
  • Color video display
  • CD quality sound output
  • Floppy disk driver (only 1.44MB disks supported)

Executor Internals:
How to Efficiently Run Mac Programs on PCs
mat@ardi.com ctm@ardi.com Executor is a commercial Macintosh emulator that uses no software from Apple, but is still able to run much 680x0 based Macintosh software faster on Pentiums than the same software runs on 680x0 based Macs. This paper contains some implementation details, including descriptions of Executor's synthetic CPU, graphics subsystem and debugging environment. Portability issues, current limitations and future plans are also presented.
Executor Overview
What Executor is
Executor is a commercial emulator that allows PCs to run many Macintosh applications. Executor does not require Macintosh ROMs or a Macintosh System file and contains no Appple code itself. Executor was written entiredly by engineers without Macintosh backgrounds who have not disassembled any of Apple's ROMs or System file.
Limitations
Because Executor was written strictly from publicly available documentation (Inside Macintosh, Tech. Notes, etc.), programs which make use of undocumented features of MacOS may fail under Executor. Furthermore, there are some portions of MacOS that we haven't implemented yet. Executor is sufficiently large that there are probably bugs in some of our code as well. We realize these are major limitations, but this paper is primarily concerned with implementation details that are interesting to our fellow programmers as opposed to feature sets and limitations which are of more concern to end users and our marketing department.

ARDI, a formerly living emulation and reverse-engineering company:
We were the only company to create Macintosh emulation software that allows Macintosh programs to run on non-Macintoshes without using Apple's Intellectual Property. However, our technology is ridiculously out-dated and is nothing but a curiosity except for a handful of users. As far as I know, is still the fastest synthetic 680x0 CPU
News from July 9th 2009 Although I stopped working on Executor in 2002, I put the Executor source on Github at the end of 2008. In June 2009, I made it build using the GNU build system. I also did a minimal port of it to Mac OS X (both PPC and Intel). To build Executor, you'll need to build first. The source to Syn68k is on Github as well. Stolen Bases, the company I co-founded in 2006 was purchased by E-Line Ventures . Although I now have a bit more free time than I have in the past, I'm mostly doing consulting work and have a new start-up on paper. Client Portal In 2002, after years as a Mac-based technical consultant, Will ONeal founded Mid-Atlantic Computer Solutions. Since then, MACS has been providing Apple-certified technical support to Macintosh based work environments across the Mid-Atlantic Region. Over time, we have grown steadily as existing clients have learned to rely upon our experience, and new clients were added, mostly by word-of-mouth, after hearing the praises of our existing cleints. In 2007, MACS expanded operations into Atlanta, doing business as Metro-Atlanta Computer Solutions. We are a unique network consultancy: we love working with technology, and we love working with people. At MACS, our goal is simple: to make sure your systems work so you are free to do what you do best. Dont take our word for it, the best examples of our expertise come from the clients we serve. Our list of cases studies is as broad as the services we provide. No two clients are exactly the same, but all share a common thread of wanting smooth-running networks, and all have chosen MACS as their advisor of choice.
