Guidelines for Securing Mobile Computing Devices
Information Security Office - June, 2010
On this page:
Introduction
Many staff and students rely on mobile computing devices for work and personal uses. Laptop computers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), USB memory (aka thumb drives), smart phones (mobile phones with advanced communication, storage and processing capabilities). They bring a lot of convenience and ease of use. They also include risks. This document outlines guidelines regarding the use of these mobile devices in the Stanford computing environment.
Risks of Mobile Computing
Mobile computing devices have a large amount of storage, are highly portable and are frequently unprotected: They are relatively easy to steal or lose, and unless precautionary measures are taken, an unauthorized person can gain access to all the information stored on them. Even if not stolen or lost, intruders can sometimes gain all the access they need if the device is left alone and unprotected, or if data is "sniffed out of the air" during wireless communications. The result can include: crippled devices, infection with a virus/spyware/malware allowing for surreptitiously capture the owner's keystrokes, and/or a device whose data has been invisibly downloaded by an intruder leading to the loss of personal and other non-public information (e.g., credit card numbers, passwords).

In the current scenario, Samsung Galaxy S is the benchmark in terms of Android phones. Its power and screen size have grown the coffers of its maker and, now, the Samsung Galaxy S2 could continue the tradition by being the first phone with Android 3.0, a new version of Android that I already talked a few days ago.Android 3.0 is the best operating system. But beyond the headlines for its OS, the Samsung Galaxy S2 stands out for its internal characteristics, so powerful that they can give dizziness. Rumors said that Samsung Galaxy S2 will have a s 4.3 inch screen and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixel AMOLED Super type. Internally, the Samsung Galaxy S2 come with a 2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of ROM and 32 GB of internal memory. If these features you will not be sufficient, will continue with an 8-megapixel camera and video recording Full HD 1080p. On the price of Samsung Galaxy S2 has not leaked anything, but I guess this is a terminal that sits above much more than normal, due to its technical quality and exclusivity in terms of operating system.

MOBILE COMPUTING

THE KLUWER INTERNATIONAL SERIES IN ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE VOLUME 353
The rapid development of wireless digital communication technology has created capabilities that software systems are only beginning to exploit. The falling cost of both communication and mobile computing devices (laptop computers, hand-held computers, etc.) is making wireless computing affordable to both business users and private consumers. Mobile computing is not a `scaled-down' version of the established and well-studied field of distributed computing. The nature of wireless communication media and the mobility of computers combine to create fundamentally new problems in networking, operating systems, and information systems. Furthermore, many of the applications envisioned for mobile computing place novel demands on software systems. Although mobile computing is still in its infancy, some basic concepts have been identified and several seminal experimental systems developed. Mobile Computing contains chapters that describe these concepts and systems, and the book describes applications that are currently being deployed and tested. Mobile Computing is a valuable reference book that may also be used as a text for a course on the subject.

Battery Breakthrough Could Revolutionize Mobile Computing
    By Sarah Perez / March 15, 2010 7:17 AM / 15 Comments Tweet
Researchers at Stanford University have just made a major breakthrough that may impact the technology industry for years to come: they've built a better battery. The project, an attempt to use lithium-sulfur in place of the lithium-ion technology that is used in batteries today, has been in development since 2007. Recently, the scientists' efforts were rewarded when they created a battery that lasts four times as long as its lithium-ion counterparts while also having the benefit of being "significantly safer" than today's batteries which occasionally explode after short-circuiting. Although still a ways off from commercial viability (and availability), the lithium-sulfur batteries promise advances like 80% more capacity, 10 times the power density and, theoretically, the ability to last four times as long as modern batteries. The new battery technology represents the final step in our quest for always-on connectivity to the mobile web. We already have Wi-Fi hotspots, 3G and 4G networks for Internet everywhere and a host of mobile gadgets from netbooks to iPads and mobile phones to notebook computers. But what we haven't had yet is a way to keep our gadgets powered up for more than a day or so without a charge. That may be soon about to change.
    An Always-On Mobile Web
With these sorts of improvements, lithium-sulfur batteries could lead the way in the next phase of the mobile revolution. They could allow us to fully enjoy the web from anywhere in the world, without having to worry about dying batteries, access to power outlets or having to carry around battery replacements when planning long-lasting mobile computing sessions.
