WINNT-INET - Windows NT on the Internet Mailing List
Contents
Overview
One of the problems of internet presence for any site was the complexity of various Services administration. For this Windows NT has unsuspected advantage over UNIX that only very few processionals know to take the full advantage of it. What is needed to normal Internet site operation? The list of the services that are required or recommended for normal site functioning is not to short, this is partial list of the services needed:
  • Name Server - DNS (bind on UNIX)
  • SMTP Smart Relay - (Sendmail on UNIX)
  • Dialing/Routing software/hardware
  • Finger/WHOIS/Telnet/HTTPd/NNTP/ListServer/TALKd - is not the full list of not required but highly recommended software
All of this required UNIX in old time but today almost everything exist also on NT that in my opinion (and I believe on yours) is much more convenient to manage. I've established this mailing list in order to discuss administration problems for Windows NT in Internet environment and I hope this will help us to make it easy and large the number of NT sites on Internet.

          Intuitive Thinker
          The NT Learner
The NT is a thinker, dwelling mostly on the abstractions, and therefore approaches concepts first, before the trivia of the details. The intuitive thinker (NT) is characterized by logic, patterns and understanding, needs to process new material alone before discussion, and must see the overall picture prior to processing details to enhance understanding. When studying alone, the NT should first look over new material to get the overall picture. Once the global concept is grasped, the pieces fit in naturally. The NT must look for patterns in the information, in order to facilitate recall, using mnemonics and other memory devices. Since NT's often do not memorize well or easily (that is, if the ST is not a subdominant), they must understand the concepts in order to figure out what they will not otherwise recall. The intuitive learners, NT and NF, work most effectively in the abstract, and need to begin new material with a global perspective. This direction is foreign for most educators, so the intuitive learner will generally be assisted by reading the material prior to class in order to glimpse the whole concept for a starting point.

How to create a Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP or Server 2003 boot floppy disk
NU2 TIP: Last updated on Apr 24, 2001
Last updated on Oct 26, 2005
The NT BOOT diskette allows you to boot from a floppy using the NT OS Loader menu to select the NT partition to load the kernel from. This can be very handy if you have lost your NT boot sector by installing another OS which copies over the partition boot record.
Supports up to 2 harddisks (any partition).
The steps are:
  • Format a floppy disk using a Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP or Server 2003 machine ( not windows 9x!
    format a: /u
Copy NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR onto the floppy disk
Download this BOOT.INI file and put it onto the floppy disk
    BOOT.INI file
This boot.ini assumes that windows is installed in the "WINDOWS" folder, for terminal server you must edit the boot.ini and replace all "WINDOWS" into "WTSRV", for Windows NT 4.0 you must edit the boot.ini and replace all "WINDOWS" into "WINNT". This boot.ini will not work for SCSI Controllers without a SCSI BIOS (need NTBOOTDD.SYS on the diskette)

    Windows NT
Home Library Technology Computer Encyclopedia (Windows N ew T echnology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. Available in separate client and server versions, it included built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. Windows NT was introduced in 1993 as Version 3.1 with the same user interface as Windows 3.1. In 1996, Version 4.0 was changed to the Windows 95 desktop (see table below). A New Lineage Unlike Windows 95/98, NT supported multiprocessing (see SMP ), added security and administrative features and offered a dual boot capability. Designed for enterprise use, each application could access 2GB of virtual memory. NT did not support Plug and Play. It was later added in Windows 2000 and XP, which were also based on the NT core technology. NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition supported clustering and failover. For x86 Machines Only NT ran 16-bit DOS and Windows applications in its own emulation mode (see Windows on Windows ) and also provided a command processor that executed DOS commands. Support for the PowerPC and MIPS platforms was planned and later dropped. Support for Alpha servers reached the beta stage, but was also dropped. See
