Operating Systems
Imagine you are building your own computer. You order the parts which include a motherboard, a central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), a hard drive, a CD/DVD drive, a power supply unit (PSU), and of course a case in which to house all this new hardware. Once built, you will have a brand new, modern computer, but when all is said and done, how are you going to use it? A computer by itself isn’t worth much if it is filled with hardware that doesn’t do anything. That is where an operating system (OS) comes into play. Imagine all the hardware inside your computer’s case are like human body parts. Each has a specific function, like instincts, which are raw and untrained. The OS is equivalent to taking a computer’s brain (for all intents and purposes, the CPU) and giving it the information needed to perform a variety of basic to advanced functions. The CPU uses its parts then to perform these functions which it places in its short-term memory (RAM) as well as to recall things that are stored away in long-term memory (hard drive). To this end, it can use all this data it has stored to display pictures on a monitor using a video interface or project audio files using a sound card. In addition it can accept a number of peripherals like printers, scanners, cameras, and more! Not too long ago, when personal computers were still relatively new and a novel addition to most households, the computer OS was typically text-based requiring the user to enter commands or choose functions from lists of prompts. That all began to change with the introduction of the graphical user interface (GUI) which now allowed users to effortlessly interact with a computer using not only a keyboard but also input devices such as mice and trackballs.

    Different Types of Operating Systems
Operating systems that create a link between users and the applications form the core of computer systems. It dissociates the programs and the hardware and simplifies resource management. Let us look at the different types of operating systems. An operating system is a software component of a computer system that is responsible for the management of various activities of the computer and the sharing of computer resources. It hosts the several applications that run on a computer and handles the operations of computer hardware. Users and application programs access the services offered by the operating systems, by means of system calls and application programming interfaces. Users interact with operating systems through Command Line Interfaces (CLIs) or Graphical User Interfaces known as GUIs. In short, operating system enables user interaction with computer systems by acting as an interface between users or application programs and the computer hardware. Here is an overview of the different types of operating systems.
Real-time Operating System: It is a multitasking operating system that aims at executing real-time applications. Real-time operating systems often use specialized scheduling algorithms so that they can achieve a deterministic nature of behavior. The main object of real-time operating systems is their quick and predictable response to events. They either have an event-driven or a time-sharing design. An event-driven system switches between tasks based of their priorities while time-sharing operating systems switch tasks based on clock interrupts.

Don Marti media empire About the Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter This operating system quality and approval metric is based on a periodic AltaVista search for each of several operating systems, directly followed by "sucks", "rules", or "rocks". We search for all operating system names exactly as shown above, with the exceptions of Mac OS , Mac OS X, and VMS. For Mac OS, we add the search results for the incorrect but common spelling "MacOS". Because Mac OS X is sometimes abbreviated to simply "OS X", the Mac OS X search is just for "OS X" we have not found other instances of this term on the web, so we can use it without confusion. For VMS, we add the results for "OpenVMS". We do not search for any derogatory slang misspellings of any operating system name. List of Operating Systems
For interested persons is this list, in order to specify as much as possible operating systems already existing. Who would like to know whether the operating system with the name xyz really exists or has existed, this is a excellent source to start. Commercial, free, open source and operating systems developed at universities as well as their derivatives are included. It does not take place a distinction after the level of development, application purpose, distribution or hardware platform. Operating systems with only different version numbers are considered only if they are technically clearly different to each other.
This list offers hundreds of operating system product and project names, many of them are based on the same operating system more or less with more or less differences in the source code. The most operating systems can be traced to few development lines and derive from a small amount of system software. This applies especially to Linux distributions with a low number of main distributions. Further projects which largely use the same code base have forged to new distributions. Depending of this there forged smaller projects with differences in the composition of the applications or source code. Other operating system families are Windows and Unix.

I finally got off my duff and incorporated all the mail people have been sending me. A few more changes are yet to be made; keep that mail coming. Please do note that, as my consciousness of computer history expands, the title is becoming increasingly inaccurate. For example, I mention nothing of mainframe or minicomputer OSes (mostly due to ignorance) and so I should probably call this " Home Computer Operating Systems Through Time" even though not all of these OSes are purely home computer machines, particularly CP/M. The title is left for historical reasons, though. New changes were last made September 2003. If you have more information about these computer systems, or have info on other systems not mentioned, please mail the maintainer Back to the Computer Workshops home page Correction: The original TRS-80 Model I had a 64x16 screen, though the Model II apparently did have the 80 column one. A batch system is one in which jobs are bundled together with the instructions necessary to allow them to be processed without intervention. Often jobs of a similar nature can be bundled together to further increase economy The basic physical layout of the memory of a batch job computer is shown below: The monitor is system software that is responsible for interpreting and carrying out the instructions in the batch jobs. When the monitor started a job, it handed over control of the entire computer to the job, which then controlled the computer until it finished. A sample of several batch jobs might look like: $JOB user_spec ; identify the user for accounting purposes $FORTRAN ; load the FORTRAN compiler source program cards $LOAD ; load the compiled program $RUN ; run the program data cards $EOJ ; end of job $JOB user_spec ; identify a new user $LOAD application $RUN data $EOJ Often magnetic tapes and drums were used to store intermediate data and compiled programs.

    V (operating system)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search
Not to be confused with System V
The V operating system (sometimes written V-System ) is a microkernel operating system that was developed by faculty and students in the Distributed Systems Group at Stanford University in the 1980s, led primarily by Prof. David Cheriton . V was the successor to the Thoth and Verax operating systems that Cheriton had worked on previously.
The original V terminology uses "process" for what is now commonly called a " thread ", and "team" for what is now commonly called a " process " consisting of multiple threads sharing an address space, but this article will use modern terminology.
The key concepts in V are multithreading and synchronous message passing . Communication between threads in V uses synchronous message passing, with short, fixed-length messages that can include access rights for the receiver to read or write part of the sender's address space before replying. The same message-passing interface is used both between threads within one process, between threads of different processes within one machine, and between threads on different machines connected by a local Ethernet . A thread receiving a message is not required to reply to it before receiving other messages; this distinguishes the model from

MkLinux is a project begun by the OSF Research Institute (now Silicomp RI) and Apple Computer to port Linux, a freely distributed UNIX-like operating system, to a variety of Power Macintosh platforms running on top of OSF Research Institute's implementation of the Mach microkernel. Beginning in the summer of 1998, development work on MkLinux transitioned from Apple and OSF to a community-led effort. A more-complete-but-still-brief history can be found on the

When a brand new computer comes off the factory assembly line, it can do nothing. The hardware needs software to make it work. Are we talking about applications software such as word processing or spreadsheet software? Partly. Figure 1: The Operating System in a Hierarchy But an applications software package does not communicate directly with the hardware. As shown in Figure 1, between the applications software and the hardware is a software interface - an operating system . An operating system is a set of programs that lies between applications software and the computer hardware. Conceptually the operating system software is an intermediary between the hardware and the applications software. Incidentally, the term system software is sometimes used interchangeably with operating system, but system software means all programs related to coordinating computer operations. System software does include the operating system, but it also includes the BIOS software (see the CPU chapter ), drivers, and service programs, which we will discuss briefly in this chapter (see Figure 2). Figure 2: System Software
Note that we said that an operating system is a set of programs. The most important program in the operating system, the program that manages the operating system, is the supervisor program, most of which remains in memory and is thus referred to as resident. The supervisor controls the entire operating system and loads into memory other operating system programs (called nonresident) from disk storage only as needed.

Most desktop or laptop PCs come pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows. Macintosh computers come pre-loaded with Mac OS X. Many corporate servers use the Linux or UNIX operating systems. The operating system (OS) is the first thing loaded onto the computer without the operating system, a computer is useless. More recently, operating systems have started to pop up in smaller computers as well.
