121. The Creation Of The UNIX* Operating System
The history of the development of Unix at Bell Labs, and how Multics was an important stepping stone.
http://www.bell-labs.com/history/unix/
The Creation of the UNIX Operating System
After three decades of use, the UNIX* computer operating system from Bell Labs is still regarded as one of the most powerful, versatile, and flexible operating systems (OS) in the computer world. Its popularity is due to many factors, including its ability to run a wide variety of machines, from micros to supercomputers, and its portability all of which led to its adoption by many manufacturers. Like another legendary creature whose name also ends in 'x,' UNIX rose from the ashes of a multi-organizational effort in the early 1960s to develop a dependable timesharing operating system. The joint effort was not successful, but a few survivors from Bell Labs tried again, and what followed was a system that offers its users a work environment that has been described as "of unusual simplicity, power, and elegance...." The system also fostered a distinctive approach to software design solving a problem by interconnecting simpler tools, rather than creating large monolithic application programs. Its development and evolution led to a new philosophy of computing, and it has been a never-ending source of both challenges and joy to programmers around the world.

Initial planning and development for Multics started in 1964. Originally it was a cooperative project led by MIT (with Fernando Corbató ) along with General Electric and Bell Labs . Bell Labs dropped out in 1969 and in 1970 GE's computer business including Multics was taken over by Honeywell Multics was conceived as a commercial product for GE and became one for Honeywell, but not a very successful one. Due to its many novel and valuable ideas Multics had a great impact in the computer field even though it was then much derided by its critics.

Extensible Operating Systems
An extensible operating system lets an application apply certain customization to tailor the operating system's behavior to the needs of the application. Applications running on personal computers have been taking advantage of the non-existing protection mechanisms in MS-DOS and the Apple Macintosh operating system to extend the operating system. For example, intercepting keystrokes and mouse events, as well as writing to screen memory directly is possible. These simple operating systems are not able to protect themselves or other applications from buggy or malicious user code. Many variants of the Unix operating system allow a trusted user (the system administrator) to modify the running system by adding new device drivers and kernel services such as different file systems. Flexibility is lost, since the applications cannot dynamically adjust the system to their needs anymore. Furthermore, the operating system still has no way of verifying that the extension will not harm the system or other applications. Current research in extensible operating systems tries to address these issues. The goal is to let applications safely modify system behavior. For example, it should be possible for an application to specify its own memory page manager. The kernel would call this page manager when the system needs to reclaim memory pages currently allocated to this application. The application specific page manager can then decide which pages should be given up. For this to be efficient, the page manager needs to reside inside the kernel, so no expensive cross-domain calls are necessary to evict memory pages. The page manager has to be isolated so it can not disrupt other kernel services or wreck havoc with the page handling of other applications.

    In the Beginning was
    the Command Line
    by Neal Stephenson
About twenty years ago Jobs and Wozniak, the founders of Apple, came up with the very strange idea of selling information processing machines for use in the home. The business took off, and its founders made a lot of money and received the credit they deserved for being daring visionaries. But around the same time, Bill Gates and Paul Allen came up with an idea even stranger and more fantastical: selling computer operating systems . This was much weirder than the idea of Jobs and Wozniak. A computer at least had some sort of physical reality to it. It came in a box, you could open it up and plug it in and watch lights blink. An operating system had no tangible incarnation at all. It arrived on a disk, of course, but the disk was, in effect, nothing more than the box that the OS came in. The product itself was a very long string of ones and zeroes that, when properly installed and coddled, gave you the ability to manipulate other very long strings of ones and zeroes. Even those few who actually understood what a computer operating system was were apt to think of it as a fantastically arcane engineering prodigy, like a breeder reactor or a U-2 spy plane, and not something that could ever be (in the parlance of high-tech) "productized."

    cisco Systems IOS Operating System
The "IOS" operating system runs on a variety of cisco platforms, including most routers and the 2900 an 3500 families of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switches. In addition, other cisco products, such as the cisco 500 family of web cache engines implement a command line interface that is similar to IOS. IOS has several features that make administration easier. The configuration file is stored as a sequence of commands. This same sequence of commands can also be displayed on the screen or written to a file over the network. There is a consistent command line interface for managing this configuration:
    • write terminal (writes configuration to screen)
    • write memory (writes configuration to non-volatile memory, e.g. flash)
    • write network (writes configuration to tftp server on network)
A large number of things can be displayed with the "show" command. Use "show ?" to get a list. The command "show run" shows the "running-configuration". The output is the same as that of "write terminal". Commands can be abbreviated to the shortest unique string. For example, "write terminal" can be abreviated as "wr term".
