    Abstract
This tutorial covers the very basics of parallel computing, and is intended for someone who is just becoming acquainted with the subject. It begins with a brief overview, including concepts and terminology associated with parallel computing. The topics of parallel memory architectures and programming models are then explored. These topics are followed by a discussion on a number of issues related to designing parallel programs. The tutorial concludes with several examples of how to parallelize simple serial programs. Level/Prerequisites: None
    Overview
    What is Parallel Computing?
    • Traditionally, software has been written for serial computation:
      • To be run on a single computer having a single Central Processing Unit (CPU);
      • A problem is broken into a discrete series of instructions.
      • Instructions are executed one after another.

LAM/MPI is now in a maintenance mode. Bug fixes and critical patches are still being applied, but little real "new" work is happening in LAM/MPI. This is a direct result of the LAM/MPI Team spending the vast majority of their time working on our next-generation MPI implementation Open MPI Although LAM is not going to go away any time soon (we certainly would not abondon our user base!) the web pages, user lists, and all the other resources will continue to be available indefinitely we would encourage all users to try migrating to Open MPI. Since it's an MPI implementation, you should be able to simply recompile and re-link your applications to Open MPI they should "just work." Open MPI contains many features and performance enhancements that are not available in LAM/MPI. Make today an Open MPI day!

LAM/MPI is a high-quality open-source implementation of the Message Passing Interface specification, including all of MPI-1.2 and much of MPI-2. INTRODUCTION
The international conference on parallel computing will be held in Ghent, Belgium from
    30 August - 2 September 2011.
The conference is a continuation of the renowned conferences on parallel computing started in Berlin in 1983.
This makes ParCo the longest running series of international conferences in Europe on advances in the
development and application of high speed parallel computing technologies.
The high scientific standard of the conference presentations and the refereed proceedings have become the
hall-mark of ParCo . The scientific program combines keynote and contributed papers, mini-symposia on particular topics as well as an industrial exhibition and industrial session. Contributions accepted for publication in the ParCo proceedings are selected on the basis of the quality of the research and its presentation. The conference organisers plan the conferences such that a maximum opportunity is created for delegates to meet and interact with fellow researchers. The informal nature of the conferences allow for easy interaction

grid Mathematica increases the power of Mathematica by adding extra computation kernels and automated network-distribution tools. Extending Mathematica 's built-in parallelization capabilities, grid Mathematica runs more tasks in parallel, over more CPUs, for faster execution. Whether you distribute tasks over local or remote CPUs or both, process coordination and management is completely automated. Appropriate parallel tasks run faster with no need for code changes. Choose the grid solution that's best for you:
Adding four additional computation kernels to the four included in a single-machine Mathematica license, grid Mathematica Local is ideal for an individual user who needs a boost of power on a multicore machine.
Providing a network-managed pool of 16 computation kernels, grid Mathematica Server can be shared by a group of Mathematica users locally and can run on remote hardware to combine the power of multiple computers.
Making it easy for users to find and run Mathematica computation kernels on remote hardware, Wolfram Lightweight Grid Manager can control high-performance clusters or create ad hoc grids from idle machines.

Large-scale simulations and data processing tasks that support engineering and scientific activities such as mathematical modeling algorithm development , and testing can take an unreasonably long time to complete or require a lot of computer memory. You can speed up these tasks by taking advantage of high-performance computing resources, such as multicore computers, GPUs, computer clusters, and grid and cloud computing services. MathWorks parallel computing products let you use these resources from MATLAB and Simulink without making major changes to your computing environment and workflows.
