      Welcome to PC²
      The Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing, PC², is an interdisciplinary institute of the University of Paderborn, Germany. We are specialized in distributed and parallel computing for research, development and practical applications and for the investigation of new fields for our partners and ourselves. Practical work has been done in a number of different areas shown in our projects page.
      Our parallel computers are amongst the most powerful of their type. They enable us to study practical applications in a high-performance computing environment. Among our computing facilities are several large Intel- and AMD-based InfiniBand- and MyriNet-clusters with up to 416 processors, and some smaller machines. These systems can be accessed conveniently via the G-WIN network.
      Within the supporting groups, theoretical work is done to develop methods and principles for the construction and efficient use of distributed and parallel computer systems.

    Correction June 4, 1999: The speed of the Leibniz computer was originally quoted as 12 Gflops. In fact the speed is much closer to 1.2 Gflops. We regret the error. May 28, 1999: During the May 18th press conference announcing Nobel Laureate Dr. Baruch Blumberg as the new head of NASA's Astrobiology Institute, Blumberg posed a challenge to the scientific community.
    "The mission is to look for life without any specifications. Nothing in the mission would preclude looking for rather strange and unusual life forms that we can't even imagine right now," said Blumberg. NASA Administrator Dan Goldin concurred, stating, "We're looking for any form of biological life. Single-cell (organisms) would be a grand slam."
    In order to effectively search for life on other planets, we first have to come to an understanding about what life IS. One way to do this is to study the forms that life can take.

What are parallel computing, grid computing, and supercomputing?
Parallel computing
Parallel computing is the concurrent use of multiple processors (CPUs) to do computational work. In traditional (serial) programming, a single processor executes the program instructions in a step-by-step manner. Some operations, however, have multiple steps that do not have time dependencies and can therefore be broken up into multiple tasks to be executed simultaneously. For example, adding a number to all the elements of a matrix does not require that the result obtained from summing one element be acquired before summing the next element. Elements in the matrix can be made available to several processors and the sums performed simultaneously, with the results available much more quickly than if the operations had all been performed serially. Parallel computations can be performed on shared-memory systems with multiple CPUs, or on distributed-memory clusters made up of smaller shared-memory systems or single-CPU systems. Coordinating the concurrent work of the multiple processors and synchronizing the results are handled by program calls to parallel libraries; these tasks usually require parallel programming expertise. The Mission Statement
Euro-Par is an annual series of international conferences dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of parallel computing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories of hardware, software, algorithms and applications for parallel computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within which to promote the development of parallel computing both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. This is particularly important at a time when parallel computing is undergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real industrial take up. The main audience for and participants in Euro-Par are seen as researchers in academic departments, government laboratories and industrial organisations. Euro-Par's objective is to be the primary choice of such professionals for the presentation of new results in their specific areas. Euro-Par is also interested in applications which demonstrate the effectiveness of the main Euro-Par themes.

What is Parallel Computing?
A Not Too Serious Explanation.
Before I explain parallel computing, it's important to understand that You can run, but you can't hide. I'll come back to this later. Suppose you have a lot of work to be done, and want to get it done much faster, so you hire 100 workers. If the work is 100 separate jobs that don't depend on each other, and they all take the same amount of time and can be easily parceled out to the workers, then you'll get it done about 100 times faster. This is so easy that it is called embarrassingly parallel . Just because it is embarrassing doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, and in fact it is probably exactly what you should do. A different option would be to parallelize each job, as discussed below, and then run these parallelizations one after another. However, as will be shown, this is probably a less efficient way of doing the work. Occasionally this isn't true because on computers, doing all of the job on one processor may require storing many results on disk, while the parallel job may spread the intermediate results in the RAM of the different processors. RAM is much faster than disks. However, if the program isn't spending a lot of time using the disk then embarrassingly parallel is the smart way to go. Assume this is what you should do unless you analyze the situation and determine that it isn't. Embarrassingly parallel is simple, and if you can get the workers do it for free then it is the cheapest solution as well.

The recent switch to parallel microprocessors is a milestone in the history of computing. Industry has laid out a roadmap for multicore designs that preserves the programming paradigm of the past via binary compatibility and cache coherence. Conventional wisdom is now to double the number of cores on a chip with each silicon generation. A multidisciplinary group of Berkeley researchers met nearly two years to discuss this change. Our view is that this evolutionary approach to parallel hardware and software may work from 2 or 8 processor systems, but is likely to face diminishing returns as 16 and 32 processor systems are realized, just as returns fell with greater instruction-level parallelism. We believe that much can be learned by examining the success of parallelism at the extremes of the computing spectrum, namely embedded computing and high performance computing. This led us to frame the parallel landscape with seven questions, and to recommend the following:
