In March 2007, Intel and Microsoft announced they would fund a Universal Parallel Computing Research Center (UPCRC) and invited the 25 top Computer Science departments to submit proposals. In August 2007, Intel and Microsoft told us that their technical committee had unanimously selected Berkeley as the top choice of the competition. The public announcement came March 2008, and included support for University of Illinois in addition to Berkeley. The five-year, $10M, UPCRC forms the foundation for the U.C. Berkeley Parallel Computing Laboratory, or Par Lab, a multidisciplinary research project exploring the future of parallel processing.

Developing Applications For Parallel Computing
Print-friendly Version
By Liang T. Chen, Distinguished Engineer and Software Architect, Platform Developer Tools, Sun Microsystems , December 15, 2005 This article discusses the important parallel application development issues now emerging from the parallel computing technology trend. It introduces and explains some of the most important industry standards such as OpenMP, MPI, and Grid Computing, and describes the current state of parallel application software development. This article highlights several significant design issues from two classes of real application case studies. It also discusses the important developer tools which are critical at the various stages during the software development cycle. In the end, it summarizes the right mindset for developers facing the challenge of developing parallel applications. 1: Introduction
There are two critical forces shaping software development today. One is the popular adoption of Parallel Computing and the other is the trend toward Service Oriented Architecture. Both ideas have existed for quite a while, but the current technology of CMT(Chip Multi-Threading) processor designs, horizontally scaled systems, near zero latency interconnects and new web service standards are all accelerating both ideas into the main stream and are becoming adopted everywhere. It is quite easy to predict that most desktop machines or even laptops will be powered by multi-core or CMT processors over the next few years. A more intriguing and important issue is whether the current state of software development is sufficient to produce good quality parallel applications for the new computing machines.

How do I download the videos?
Why should I download videos from Channel9?
  • It's an easy way to save the videos you like locally. You can save the videos in order to watch them offline. If all you want is to hear the audio, you can download the MP3!
Which version should I choose?
  • If you want to view the video on your PC, XBox or Media Center, download the High Quality WMV file (this is the highest quality version we have available). If you'd like a lower bitrate version, to reduce the download time or cost, then choose the Medium Quality WMV file. If you have a Zune, iPhone, or iPod device, choose the MP4 file. If you just want to hear the audio of the video, choose the MP3 file. Medium Quality WMV
