Since then, we've changed how we use Python a ton internally. We have lots more production software written in Python. We've basically reimplemented all our production service monitoring in Python and also our production software management infrastructure for a significant amount of what we run. A big component to that has been our use of Twisted Python. We're pretty reliant on the Twisted framework, and we use it for our base-line management software that we use to run the great majority of production services that we have, our monitoring infrastructure and the next-generation thing that we have coming, which is a suite of programs that will automate the upgrade process for us. Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years
Peter Norvig
Why is everyone in such a rush?
Walk into any bookstore, and you'll see how to Teach Yourself Java in 7 Days alongside endless variations offering to teach Visual Basic, Windows, the Internet, and so on in a few days or hours. I did the following power search at Amazon.com pubdate: after 1992 and title: days and (title: learn or title: teach yourself) and got back 248 hits. The first 78 were computer books (number 79 was Learn Bengali in 30 days ). I replaced "days" with "hours" and got remarkably similar results: 253 more books, with 77 computer books followed by Teach Yourself Grammar and Style in 24 Hours at number 78. Out of the top 200 total, 96% were computer books. The conclusion is that either people are in a big rush to learn about computers, or that computers are somehow fabulously easier to learn than anything else. There are no books on how to learn Beethoven, or Quantum Physics, or even Dog Grooming in a few days. Felleisen et al. give a nod to this trend in their book How to Design Programs , when they say "Bad programming is easy.

lists A programming language is an artificial language designed to express computations that can be performed by a machine , particularly a computer . Programming languages can be used to create programs that control the behavior of a machine, to express algorithms precisely, or as a mode of human communication. Many programming languages have some form of written specification of their syntax (form) and semantics (meaning). Some languages are defined by a specification document. For example, the C programming language is specified by an ISO Standard. Other languages, such as Perl , have a dominant implementation that is used as a reference. The earliest programming languages predate the invention of the computer , and were used to direct the behavior of machines such as Jacquard looms and player pianos . Thousands of different programming languages have been created, mainly in the computer field, with many more being created every year. Most programming languages describe computation in an imperative style, i.e., as a sequence of commands, although some languages, such as those that support

Or, if you watched the movie Tron , perhaps your mental picture is of a number of people sitting in little cubicles, all typing on terminals and hoping the "Master Control Program" will permit them to complete their work. Back in the real world, programming just plain doesn't have to be like that. Programs can range from the ridiculously simple to the hideously complex, with all possible conditions in between. So, let's start by defining just what a program is and what it means, and then we can look at what you might have to do with it.
A program is a list of instructions, together with any fixed information required to carry out those instructions. This applies to computers, of course, but also to any other subject that involves fixed instructions.

Secure Programming for Linux and Unix HOWTO Creating Secure Software
This is the main web site for my free book, the Secure Programming for Linux and Unix HOWTO . This book provides a set of design and implementation guidelines for writing secure programs for Linux and Unix systems. Such programs include application programs used as viewers of remote data, web applications (including CGI scripts), network servers, and setuid/setgid programs. This document includes specific guidance for a number of languages, including C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, and Ada95. I give this book away in the hope that future software developers won't repeat past mistakes, resulting in more secure systems.

Please improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate (March 2009) Defensive programming is a form of defensive design intended to ensure the continuing function of a piece of software in spite of unforeseeable usage of said software. The idea can be viewed as reducing or eliminating the prospect of Murphy's Law having effect. Defensive programming techniques are used especially when a piece of software could be misused mischievously or inadvertently to catastrophic effect. Defensive programming is an approach to improve software and source code, in terms of:
    • General quality - Reducing the number of software bugs and problems. Making the source code comprehensible - the source code should be readable and understandable so it is approved in a code audit Making the software behave in a predictable manner despite unexpected inputs or user actions.
