Coffee Ground Filled Balloon Gripper Holds Promise
Posted 28 Oct 2010 at 13:47 UTC by Rog-a-matic
The age-old problem of creating a robotic gripper capable of grasping unusually shaped objects has advanced one more step with this interesting development from researchers at Cornell, the University of Chicago and iRobot Corp. The Universal Gripper as they call it consists of a balloon filled with a jam-able particulate. When the balloon comes in contact with an object it conforms easily, then when a vacuum is applied, the particulates interlock providing the grasping action. Early material included rice and ground-up tires, but coffee seems to work really well. Video Read more... (0 replies)
Bee Solves Travelling Salesman Problem
Posted 25 Oct 2010 at 15:54 UTC by Rog-a-matic
Researchers at Queen Mary, University of London and Royal Holloway have discovered that bees learn to fly the shortest possible route between flowers even if they discover the flowers in a different order. This 'Travelling Salesman Problem' often takes supercomputers days to solve, but Bees are now the first animals proven to do it. Computer-controlled artificial flowers were used to track the bee's path and found they quickly learned the shortest route. Since a bee's brain is only the size of a pinhead, researchers are hoping to identify the neural circuitry required and use that understanding to construct their own systems that rival the computational power of existing machines.

Robotics brings together several very different engineering areas and skills. There is metalworking for the body. There is mechanics for mounting the wheels on the axles, connecting them to the motors and keeping the body in balance. You need electronics to power the motors and connect the sensors to the controllers. At last you need the software to understand the sensors and drive the robot around. This book tries to cover all the key areas of robotics as a hobby. When possible examples from industrial robots will be addressed too. You'll notice very few "exact" values in these texts. Instead, vague terms like "small", "heavy" and "light" will be used. This is because most of the time you'll have a lot of freedom in picking these values, and all robot projects are unique in available materials.

Infiniband
by nathan on Jul.30, 2009, under Hardware Infiniband is an often overlooked technology outside of the supercomputer / clustering space. I think that is a shame given some of the amazing aspects of this technology. Infiniband is a serial connection with a raw full duplex data rate of 2.5 Gbit/s known as 1x single data rate (SDR) mode. In addition to a double data rate (DDR) and a quad data rate (QDR) mode, links can be aggregated in units of 4 or 12 paths yielding up to 120 Gbit/s in 12X QDR mode. In a day where server motherboards are just starting to see 10 Gibt/s ethernet cards, the most common “low speed” infiniband options is 10 Gbit/s 4X SDR cards. Infiniband uses remote direct memory access (RDMA) for data transfer allowing data to be moved between hosts directly without any CPU cycles. All of this happens in about 1/4 th the port to port speed of 10 Gbit/s ethernet!
