Flyer 2011 Robotics: Science and Systems Conference The 2011 Robotics: Science and Systems Conference will bring together researchers working on algorithmic or mathematical foundations of robotics, robotics applications, and analysis of robotic systems. High quality, original papers are solicited in all areas of robotics. The final program will be the result of a highly selective review process designed to include the best work of its kind in every category. The conference will be single track to allow attendees an opportunity to experience the best research in all areas of robotics. The program will include invited talks as well as oral and poster presentations of refereed papers.     robotics
    The field of computer science and engineering concerned with creating robots, devices that can move and react to sensory input . Robotics is one branch of artificial intelligence Robots are now widely used in factories to perform high-precision jobs such as welding and riveting. They are also used in special situations that would be dangerous for humans for example, in cleaning toxic wastes or defusing bombs. Although great advances have been made in the field of robotics during the last decade, robots are still not very useful in everyday life, as they are too clumsy to perform ordinary household chores. Robot was coined by Czech playwright Karl Capek in his play R.U.R (Rossum's Universal Robots), which opened in Prague in 1921. Robota is the Czech word for forced labor. The term robotics was introduced by writer Isaac Asimov. In his science fiction book I, Robot, published in 1950, he presented three laws of robotics: 1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

The Robotics Lab at the University of Surrey ...
The Mechatronic Systems and Robotics Research Group have been based in the University of Surrey Robotics Lab (room 2 AB 18) on the University campus since 1989. The lab houses all research facilities, including industrial and laboratory robotic workcells, a Bosch conveyor system, and a laser metrology area, in addition to the research group office facilities.
Robot Systems
The group has three industrial robot arm systems (2 6 DOF Unimation Puma's and an Adept Systems Scara device), three Zymark laboratory testing robots (donated to the group by Esso UK) and a customised RWI mobile vehicle. One of the PUMA controllers has been by-passed using a custom built open architecture robot controller which allows for interfacing to various external sensor systems, including the original University of Surrey stereo head system . The latest incarnation of the stereo head is a very compact, fast device which may be mounted on the RWI system and controlled by an operator wearing a virtual reality headset equipped with a three degree of freedom Polhemus tracking sensor.
Flexible Workcell
A recent development in the facilties that are available for research and teaching is the MSRR-Bosch flexible manufacturing workcell. This features over 40 feet of conveyor and incorporates two industrial robots, vision systems and other sensors. Also available is a 3 axis continuous path controlled Deckel CNC machine, which may be programmed from the Department's CAD suite.
