Seymour Cray
The passing of Seymour Cray on October 5, 1996 due to an unfortunate auto accident has taken one of the geniuses from the computer industry. His brilliance will be missed. Cray's Jeep Cherokee rolled three times after the driver of another vehicle tried to pass him and struck another car, which slammed into Cray's vehicle. The other motorists weren't injured.
Daniel Rarick, 33, of Colorado Springs was cited for careless driving that caused serious bodily injury, said Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Rob Wilson.
Cray, who devoted his life to trying to develop the world's fastest supercomputers, is a legendary figure in the industry.
"He is the Thomas Edison of the supercomputing industry," said Larry L. Smarr, director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.
"We wouldn't have the kinds of airplanes and cars that we have now if it hadn't been for him," said John Rollwagen, chairman of Computer Network Technology Corp. of Plymouth, Minn.
Supercomputers, which calculate billions of scientific problems per second, are used for weather forecasting, automobile crash simulation, oil exploration and drug research.

A tribute and obituary for the late Seymour Cray.

In Honor of Seymour Roger Cray
Growing up in Minnesota gave me early access to computers, for both Control Data Corporation and Cray Research made their homes nearby. One of the pioneers in the computer field was Seymour Cray, responsible for the design of several of the world's fastest computers. This includes the first computer I ever programmed, the CDC 6600 , at the University of Minnesota Computer Center in 1967. Mr. Cray passed away on October 5, 1996, and his loss is mourned by many: The Charles Babbage Institute used to have a nice virtual exhibit about Seymour Cray, but unfortunately it's been removed and the current museum archivists don't know what happened to the files. About the only thing left is this

GETTING STARTED WITH SUPERCOMPUTING
An Approach for High School Students

1.0 Introduction
Because of remarkable advances in computer technology, scientists now have a new problem solving tool, a supercomputer. Supercomputers supported by high powered graphics workstations are extremely valuable resources for a wide range of scientific investigations. High performance computing is becomming increasingly more important to many scientific and engineering disciplines, so it is important for educators to prepare future generations to be ready for that growing demand. Supercomputer access was originally reserved for graduate students and research scientists. However, in 1988 as part of a national contest sponsored by ETA Systems, a division of Contol Data Corporation, this power was made available to high school students. The contest was called SuperQuest.

PlayStation: First games then science Soon supercomputers could be made out of Sony PlayStation 2 game consoles Scientists at the US National Center for Supercomputing Applications, (NCSA) have linked together 70 PlayStation 2s to find out how good they are at crunching numbers. The machines were linked together as part of a project to investigate how to cut the cost of creating powerful clusters of computers. Now the scientists are refining the Sony supercomputer and seeing how it compares to other clusters around the world. Cheap tricks The researchers estimate that the cluster of consoles could be capable of up to half a trillion operations per second, a figure that compares well with other supercomputers. To perform this feat the researchers are using the graphics co-processor buried inside the console.
