Virtual Reality NeoVR currently provides information about the latest uses and developments in the field of virtual reality. Three-dimensional imaging of things can be reached through the representation of their surfaces. Surface texture, shading, and reflected lighting provide important cues for 3D sensation. Two-dimensional texture gradients are used for surfaces in a process called "texture mapping." These surfaces may then be shaded and enhanced with reflected light to further refine depth sensation. We all are accustomed to components lit from a single light source above, so shading and light reflection based on a light shining from above gives strong cues for detail sensation. One of the more difficult ways of illuminating virtual elements ofvolves tracing the rays of individual light rays as they are reflected and refracted from the objects. This is known as "ray tracing." Also see VR-interesting proprioceptors and mechanoreceptors In order to simulate the sensation of touch, VR platforms must simulate the physical resistance that virtual things would have on our movement like they were real. This resistance can be transmitted to one's body though several mechanical pistons, air cushions, or magnetic resistance machines integrated into gloves or body suit. Simulation of touch and motion through such devices is known as "kinesthetics." While haptics technology currently lags behind computer to human interaction through vision and audio signals, it will likely become more prevalent with technological advances.

At UNC, Rheingold docks molecules and strolls through a building yet to be built; at NASA, he pilots helicopter simulators and operates robots in virtual "outer space;" and in Tsukuba, Japan, he has a high-tech out-of-body experience, watching himself through the eyes of a telerobot. With Howard's usual "whole systems" approach, he combines philosophical, psychological, social, and economic, and even sexual insights on this... er... up-and-coming technology. A very readable account of a historic moment in technological development. Highly recommended. The only draw-back to this book is that it contains NO pictures! This seems like a really ridiculous decision by the publisher, given that the book is about a completely visual (and for some, hard to visualize) new technology. (G. Branwyn)
