Quoting from the book Solar System Astrophysics by Brandt and Hodge (p406), "The displays of Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis have excited the imagination of men for many years. Considerable observational and theoretical effort has been devoted to the solution of the auroral problem, but essential understanding is yet to come."

Atmospheric Physics HYSICS is the science of matter and energy. It is primarily concerned with the laws and properties of the material universe. Our understanding of these laws and properties has been the basis for many of the advancements made in the areas of mechanics, heat, sound, and electricity. Ultimately, the study of physics has led us into a completely new age, the nuclear age. The use of physics is not limited to physicists. To an ever increasing extent, our expanding knowledge of matter is being applied to all areas of science, including the science of meteorology. The majority of what we know about the atmosphere has come from the study of physics. Therefore, it is essential for every meteorologist to have an understanding of basic physics. This understanding not only will make your job as a weather journeyman more meaningful but will prepare you to advance in this highly specialized scientific field. 1–1. Units of Measurement In understanding the basics of physics, we have to understand how to measure different quantities associated with this science. These quantities are expressed in terms common people do not use every day. It’s important to understand what these quantities represent and how they are measured before you understand their application. Let’s begin by exploring some fundamental measurements used in the study of physics. 001. Fundamental quantities of measurement

LATEST AUDIO FILES: A STEREO recording of spectacular 'hooks.'
This file was recorded in northern Alberta, Canada on 13 August 2000 at approximately 1500 UT, during my August 2000 (near solar-maximum) VLF recording expedition into the auroral-zone region of northern Alberta, Canada. "Natural Radio" describes naturally-occurring electromagnetic (radio) signals emanating from lightning storms, aurora (The Northern and Southern Lights), and most importantly, the Earth's magnetic-field (the Magnetosphere). This is a presentation of Earth's natural radio emissions that occur in the extremely-low-frequency to very-low-frequency (ELF-VLF) radio spectrumspecifically, at AUDIO frequencies between approximately 100 to 10,000 cycles-per second (0.1 - 10 kHz). Unlike sound waves which are vibrations of air molecules that our ears are sensitive to, natural radio waves as received at ground-level are vibrations of electric and magnetic energy (electromagnetic waves) whichthough occurring at the same frequencies as soundcannot be listened to without an audio-frequency ELF-VLF radio receiver to convert the natural radio signals directly into the same sound frequencies. Another amazing realm of nature is thus ready to be explored and observed. Naturally-occurring VLF radio emissions are being studied both via ground-based receiving systems as well as orbiting spacecraft receivers such as the

Secrets of the Polar Aurora
by David P. Stern From talk presented in Anchorage, Alaska, 11 August 2002
Alaska is known as a good place for seeing the polar aurora, also known as "Northern Lights." Originally the phenomenon was named "Aurora Borealis," Latin for "northern dawn," since in the lower 48 states or in mid-Europe it may appear (on the rare occasions when it does) as a glow on the northern horizon, as if the sun was rising from the wrong direction. But the southern hemisphere has the same phenomenon, with the glow coming from the south , so scientists prefer to call it simply the "Polar Aurora." Most visitors to Alaska never get to see an aurora, because they come in the summer, when skies are rarely dark enough. Alaskans claim that only around August 16 does the sky get dark enough to see stars, which is when aurora stands out. After that date, your best bet is to go to Fairbanksand since the brightest auroras occur around midnight (or later, due to Alaska's time zone), you might have to stay up a long time. Perhaps it is better then to ask the night clerk at your hotel to ring you up if a good display becomes visible.
