An international organization of researchers, students, environmental professionals and others interested in the advancement and promotion of soil biology and ecology.
http://www.wcsu.ctstateu.edu/ses/ses.html
The Soil Ecology Society (SES) is an international organization of researchers, students, environmental professionals and others interested in the advancement and promotion of soil biology and ecology. The SES holds a bi-annual conference which addresses contemporary issues in the field of soil ecology, and which provides a forum for ecologists, soil scientists, and members of related disciplines, to present original research results, participate in meeting symposia and workshops, and identify priorities for future research. The proceedings of these conferences are often published as books or as special journal issues. Comments on this page? Contact

Everything is connected to everything else.
Everything must go somewhere.

Our choices therefore lie not in whether but in how we manage the land. We would all agree that we must do it in an ecologically responsible way. - George Seddon, Gardening Responsibility This we know... the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to earth. All things are connected, like the blood which connects one family. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life -

Soil ecology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Soil ecology is the study of the interactions among soil organisms, and between biotic and abiotic aspects of the soil environment. It is particularly concerned with the cycling of nutrients , formation and stabilization of the pore structure , the spread and vitality of pathogens , and the biodiversity of this rich biological community

edit Overview
Soil is made up of a multitude of physical chemical , and biological entities, with many interactions occurring among them. Soil is a variable mixture of broken and weathered minerals and decaying organic matter. Together with the proper amounts of air and water, it supplies, in part, sustenance for plants as well as mechanical support. The diversity and abundance of soil life exceeds that of any other ecosystem . Plant establishment, competitiveness, and growth is governed largely by the ecology below-ground, so understanding this system is an essential component of plant sciences and terrestrial ecology.
edit Features of the ecosystem
  • Moisture itself becomes a major limiting factor on land. Terrestrial organisms are constantly confronted with the problem of dehydration. Transpiration or evaporation of water from plant surfaces is an energy dissipating process unique to the terrestrial environment.

44. Soil Ecology
Dr J Floot Anthoni explains how the soil works, what lives there and how nutrients are recycled.

Soil ecology
By Dr J Floor Anthoni (2000)
www.seafriends.org.nz/enviro/soil/ecology.htm Soils, their living organisms, and the plant ecosystems rooted in them, have developed in close synchrony ever since plants evolved. Between them there exists a strange synergy, whose only purpose seems to be to sustain life to its maximum. Man's intervention, by cutting forests, seeding grassland and planting crops amounts to a major shock to this earthy world. Man's ignorance and unfriendliness towards the soil may lead to his own destruction. Knowing how the soil's ecosystem works, what it needs and how it likes to be treated, could save our soils for posterity. How does soil work? What happens in the soil? How are nutrients recycled in soil? What is the water cycle and how does the water cycle fertilise the soil? What lives in soil? What is the role of fungi? Life is about organic carbon compound, stored in the vegetation and animals, but also in the soil. Soil organisms' energy comes only from the various carbon compounds recycled to the soil. internal cycles The nature of an ecosystem is to recycle the most precious building blocks of life, its nutrients, energy and water. These ecosystems have evolved over eons of time, long before the dawn of Man. The invisible ecosystem of the soil is what makes soil fertile.

Plant Ecology
Plant Ecology is a research department within the Evolutionary Biology Centre . Our research analyses the structure and dynamics of plant populations and communities. Plant population ecology, evolutionary ecology, ecophysiology, and vegetation dynamics are fields of research represented. Basic research dominates, but there are also applied projects seeking to determine the consequences of changes in land use, and other human-induced changes of the environment. Tropical Rain Forest Ecology
Chair in Vegetation Ecology
Prof. David M. Newbery
Within a frame of inquiry into vegetation ecology in general, my principal interests lie with tropical rain forest ecology and ecosystems. Particular emphasis is placed upon:
  • structure, phenology and dynamics of woody vegetation ecosystem and community processes nutrient cycling and water relations in trees quantitative, statistical methods of analysis and modeling
My other major concern is with:
  • theory and philosophy of science in vegetation ecology

Historical Background
In 1995 the Center for Environmental Biotechnology was set up as a multidivisonal center under the direction of Dr. Jenny Hunter-Cevera. In 1998, the Ecology Department was created within the Earth Sciences Division to provide personnel resource management for scientists and engineers within ESD whose expertise was in the general area of ecology, including population ecology, community ecology, systems ecology and environmental engineering. This was a new department, and the personnel were originally scattered among the other ESD departments , though most were under the Center for Environmental Biotechnology. In 1999, the name of the Ecology Department was changed to the Microbial Ecology and Environmental Engineering Department, because it was felt that this more closely reflected the expertise of the small group of scientists and engineers that were within that department.
