Geology
Turkey Table of Contents Earthquakes range from barely perceptible tremors to major movements measuring five or higher on the open-ended Richter scale. Earthquakes measuring more than six can cause massive damage to buildings and, especially if they occur on winter nights, numerous deaths and injuries. Turkey's most severe earthquake in the twentieth century occurred in Erzincan on the night of December 28-29, 1939; it devastated most of the city and caused an estimated 160,000 deaths. Earthquakes of moderate intensity often continue with sporadic aftershocks over periods of several days or even weeks. The most earthquake-prone part of Turkey is an arc-shaped region stretching from the general vicinity of Kocaeli to the area north of Lake Van on the border with Armenia and Georgia. More than 80 percent of the land surface is rough, broken, and mountainous, and therefore is of limited agricultural value. The terrain's ruggedness is accentuated in the eastern part of the country, where the two mountain ranges converge into a lofty region with a median elevation of more than 1,500 meters, which reaches its highest point along the borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. Turkey's highest peak, Mount Ararat (Agri Dagi)about 5,166 meters highis situated near the point where the boundaries of the four countries meet. Enter your search terms Submit search form

2010 GEOSCIENCE FIELD TRIPS The fall 2010 field trips will be held October 23 rd and November 13 th in the La Rue-Pine Hills Area of Jackson and Union counties. The area has an abundance of different plants, songbirds, reptiles, and woodland mammals. Trilobites and brachiopods, fossils of the Lower Devonian, can be found in the area. The trip will showcase the complicated geology of the Ste. Genevieve Fault System and Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian age rocks. The trip will also visit part of the Trail of Tears State Forest. Advance registration is required.

Geology
The Geology Program at West Virginia University prepares people for a range of fields - from environmental geology to paleontology to hydrogeology. The program offers undergraduate, Masters, and PhD degrees in the discipline of Geology. The major emphases of the Geology Program of the Department of Geology and Geography are sedimentary and environmental geology. The strengths of the Program are related to the natural resources and environmental needs of West Virginia and the proximity of the natural laboratory of the Appalachian Mountains. The program in hydrogeology and environmental geology has recently been expanded to meet the growing demand in these fields. The Geology Program offers undergraduate and graduate opportunities in clastic and carbonate sedimentology and stratigraphy, environmental geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, mineralogy, metamorphic petrology, paleontology, petroleum geology, Quaternary geology and geomorphology, structural geology and tectonics. Check under research specialty areas. The Geology Program maintains a summer field camp in southeastern West Virginia. In addition to providing field experiences in West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, the Program has sponsored field trips to the Florida Keys, Maine, and the Rocky Mountains.

GEOLOGY SONGS
The Geologist's Come-All-Ye (a folksong) by Brenna Lorenz Come all ye lads and you will hear
About the life that we love dear, Refrain: With our diddle-air-re-oh, falling rock away, knock it down,
Fall-di-knock-a-rock-away, me laddie-oh! Geologists all bold and strong,
We are the subject of this song. We get up with the rising sun
And map until the day is done. We walk two hundred miles a day,
And study rocks along the way. We fight our way through brush and trees
And slog through bog up to our knees. When flies are thick, then we don't walk,
They carry us from rock to rock. We swing our hammers with a whack,
Take home an outcrop on our backs. Nine hundred pounds of rock or more
Is just an average daily score. If we run out of food to eat
There's always rock beneath our feet.
