Preservation of the Art of Celestial Navigation and related skills. Profile
The Foundation for the Promotion of the Art of Navigation (The Navigation Foundation) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation of the art of navigation. Information
The Navigation Foundation was started in 1981 by a group of experienced navigators who believe that navigation is a personal skill essential to the seaman, even in this age of electronics. The Navigation Foundation strives to educate and inform its members through the publication of a quarterly newsletter featuring articles on navigational methods, history of navigation, and reviews of books on the subject. A reader's forum provides opportunities for neophytes and experts to exchange ideas and recount experiences. Frequently issues will contain a lesson in basics of navigation, designed for newcomers. In order to raise public interest and awareness, The Navigation Foundation awards prizes for demonstrated excellence in navigation at the United States Naval Academy, Tabor Academy, and other academic institutions. It provides assistance in the development of devices and aids to the navigator. The Foundation asks members to donate $35 each year to cover the cost of providing the services outlined. Your donation is fully deductible for U.S. income tax purposes, and goes entirely towards the objectives of The Navigation Foundation, since the officers serve without pay. This is a people-to-people organization without advertising or commercialization. As a benefit of membership, members receive a substantial discount on books, charts and publications ordered through The Foundation.

How to use a compass
My main motivation for writing these pages is to let people have the same nice experiences I have had when I have been, well, nowhere... Places you see just by coincidence. The compass is an indispensable tool to find your way home, or to go nowhere
The pages have moved!
As returning visitors may have noticed, these pages are now to be found at www.learn-orienteering.org . I ask all who have bookmarks or links to the old addresses to update as soon as possible (the address you now have is the new one). For now, you will find the interesting stuff from this page at the URL http://www.learn-orienteering.org/old/ , but as the old -word indicates, I have great plans to extend the scope of these tutorials, and when that happens, you will find everything from the main index page . For most of you, you will find the most interesting links from this page, so read on!
Foreword
This tutorial is intended for individuals and non-profit organizations, and may be printed out and used free of charge as long as my name is on it. I hope these pages will help people enjoy and learn more about our beautiful earth.

17 Jan 99 1520 - New location later in day The sundial face was obtained compliments of Great Circle Studio, Pacific Grove, California, USA via their website at: http://www.gcstudio.com The black curves (hyperbolas) represent the months of the Zodiac. The lowermost curve in the first image represents the locus of the gnomon's shadow for 22 December. The hyperbola for 21 March or 23 September is a straight line (forth from either end). The uppermost hyperbola is for 21 June. (Note that the five inner curves each represent two months in opposite seasons.) The 4-color curves (blue, green red, orange) representing the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, respectively) are the locus of the shadow for the same civil hour each day over the year. Note: The gnomon used above is an aluminum roofing nail cut to the appropriate length (the 'Side A' length from the Great Circle Studio pattern). The cut nail was sharpened to decrease the size of the tip's shadow, and then was inserted through a hole from the back of the light cardboard face. This gnomon has proven to be quite a bit sturdier and stable than the recommended version and is much easier to attach.

Secrets of Ancient Navigation
by Peter Tyson
Oak and triple bronze must have girded the breast of him
who first committed his frail bark to the angry sea
Odes "Aye, mate." One can almost hear the weary assent of countless a hoary sailor upon hearing these words of Horace, almost see the rheumy eye staring distantly as if at some ghost ship on the horizon that only he can see. For the old poet's words ring only too true. In the three or four millennia of seafaring before John Harrison came along, how could mariners know where they were going? The sea is literally without landmarks to guide by, a vast, featureless emptiness ready and more than willing to swallow up the lost and unlucky, leaving no trace save the awful memories of those who survived them.
But what if land were nowhere nearby? The Phoenicians looked to the heavens. The sun moving across the commonly cloudless Mediterranean sky gave them their direction and quarter. The quarters we know today as east and west the Phoenicians knew as Asu (sunrise) and Ereb Now to Miletos he steered his course
That was the teaching of old Thales
Who in bygone days gauged the stars
Of the Little Bear by which the Phoenicians
Steered across the seas The Norsemen had to have other navigational means at their disposal, for in summer the stars effectively do not appear for months on end in the high latitudes. One method they relied on was watching the behavior of birds. A sailor wondering which way land lay could do worse than spying an auk flying past. If the beak of this seabird is full, sea dogs know, it's heading towards its rookery; if empty, it's heading out to sea to fill that beak. One of the first Norwegian sailors to hazard the voyage to Iceland was a man known as Raven-Floki for his habit of keeping ravens aboard his vessel. When he thought he was nearing land, Raven-Floki released the ravens, which he had deliberately starved. Often as not, they flew "as the crow flies" directly toward land, which Raven-Floki would reach simply by following their lead.
