It covers a wide range of topics, including marine organisms and ecosystem dynamics; ocean currents waves , and geophysical fluid dynamics; plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor; and fluxes of various chemical substances and physical properties within the ocean and across its boundaries. These diverse topics reflect multiple disciplines that oceanographers blend to further knowledge of the world ocean and understanding of processes within it: biology chemistry geology meteorology , and physics as well as geography

Oceanography contains peer-reviewed articles that chronicle all aspects of ocean science and its applications. In addition, Oceanography solicits and publishes news and information, meeting reports, book reviews, and shorter, editor-reviewed articles that address public policy and education and how they are affected by science and technology. We encourage submission of short papers to the Breaking Waves section that describe novel approaches to multidisciplinary problems in ocean science. Oceanography is published in March, June, September, and December in online and paper format. Oceanography is covered in the Thomson Reuters Journal Citations Reports and the Science Citation Index Expanded

The Oceanography Society was founded in 1988 to disseminate knowledge of oceanography and its application through research and education, to promote communication among oceanographers, and to provide a constituency for consensus-building across all the disciplines of the field. To accomplish these goals we:
    • Publish Oceanography , a magazine that promotes and chronicles all aspects of ocean science and its applications
    • Hold meetings to disseminate knowledge and promote communication among oceanographers
    • Give awards in recognition of distinguished research in and contributions to oceanography
The Oceanography Society is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization incorporated in the District of Columbia.

          Oceanography
Physical oceanographers study the mechanisms of energy transfer through the sea and across its boundaries as well as the physical interactions of the ocean with its surroundings. Research activities include studies of the general circulation of the oceans; properties of wind waves, internal waves, and tsunamis; optical and acoustical properties of the ocean; and the influence of the surf on nearshore currents and sediment transport. Scripps physical oceanographers are designing computer models that incorporate factors such as water turbulence into biological studies of plankton distribution, helping scientists develop better models of ocean ecology. Researchers are mapping ocean currents, generating high-resolution surveys that allow greater understanding of seasonal and decadal variations in the structure of ocean circulation.

    http://www.palomar.edu/oceanography/links/Careers.html
Oceanography at Palomar College: Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
    • What is the role of the ocean in limiting climate change? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
    • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.

Limnological research projects are also undertaken under the oceanography degree. The Ph.D. degree is offered in oceanography. Opportunities for laboratory and field work are available through the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, including the Institute of Marine Science. These include laboratories in Fairbanks, the Seward Marine Center, Kasitsna Bay, the Juneau Center and the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in Kodiak. Research vessels operated by the institute and school include the R/V Little Dipper, which operates on day trips in Resurrection Bay. Laboratory facilities include a seawater system at Seward and a variety of modern and analytical instrumentation, including stable isotope mass spectrometers, a gamma spectrometer, a flow cytometer facility, and gas and liquid chromatography equipment. Mainframe and personal computing facilities are readily accessible to graduate students.
