Diatoms and Copepods In Dabob Bay, WA Paradigms and paradoxes in marine food chains Home Team Dabob Dabob Bay Image Gallery ... Undergraduate Student Projects Project Summary In coastal and estuarine waters, the traditional paradigm of production is that a spring algae bloom - dominated by diatoms - supports the reproduction of crustacean zooplankton - mostly copepods - which provide food for larval predatory and piscivorous fish (e.g. gadids, salmonids, etc.) as well as for planktivorous fish (clupeids).  However, laboratory work over the last decade has begun to question the link between diatoms and copepods.  A number of studies have unequivocally shown that female copepods that are fed high concentrations of diatoms have a reduced reproductive success compared with female copepods that are fed other algal food types.  These findings have been ascribed to either toxins in the diatoms or nutritional deficiencies in the diatoms.  In spite of the laboratory evidence, field observations of a direct effect of diatom diets on copepod reproduction are rare.  The goal of our study was to unambiguously determine if diatoms can affect copepod reproduction in situ .  To do this we embarked upon a three-year, NSF funded research project, headed by researchers here at the University of Washington.

are general survey, beginning-level, marine science classes at Orange Coast College. Both
classes introduce students to physical, chemical, geological, meteorological, and biological
oceanography concepts. The lecture class is worth 3 units and the lab is worth 1 unit. They
are also the prerequisite classes for all of the other marine science classes offered at O.C.C.
(i.e. Marine Mammals, Aquarium class, Coastal Oceanography, and Marine Biology). These
two classes are transferable to both the University of California and the California State
University system for course credit and unit credit to fulfill the requirments under the
I.G.E.T.S.I. transfer program for physical and natural science credit. Both classes complement
each other and it is possible to take the lecture class (MS 100) without taking the lab class (MS100L). However, concurrent enrollment in MS 100 or successful completion of MS 100 with a

Oceanography
The Oceanography program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree is unique to California and is designed to allow the student to accomplish any of the following educational objectives:
  • Preparation as an ocean scientist to collect, process, and aid in the interpretation of scientific data collected on oceanographic cruises and in other field work conducted by federal, state, educational, and private agencies. Preparation for graduate study in Oceanography or in other closely related sciences by acquiring of a broad, rigorous science background. Provision of a broad-based science background and sound fundamental knowledge of the oceans for those students who have an academic interest in Oceanography but do not intend to pursue it as a career.
In order to meet these objectives, course work and experience required to attain a B.S. degree in Oceanography are purposely kept flexible and provide a variety of pathways which the student may follow. In all cases, however, the student acquires a science background of considerable breadth, an understanding of fundamental concepts unique to Oceanography, and an appreciation for how concepts from various closely allied science fields are interrelated and applied to the solution of oceanographic problems. Our goal is to develop as fully as possible an interdisciplinary train of thought which is essential to the study and understanding of the oceans. At the same time, students acquire in-depth knowledge in a science field closely related to Oceanography (e.g., biology, geology, physics, mathematics or chemistry) by way of a block (at least 10 units) of approved electives.

Oceanography
School Overview
108 Oceanography Teaching Building Oceanography - study of the marine environment and its interactions with the earth, the biosphere, and the atmosphere - is prompted both by the intellectual desire to understand how the oceans move and how life develops in a salty, cold environment, and the need to use wisely the ocean's resources for the benefit of humanity. As an interdisciplinary science, oceanography integrates the basic principles of biology, chemistry, geology, physics, geophysics, mathematics, botany, zoology, meteorology, and geography. Applications of high technology to oceanographic instrumentation and vessels, increasingly sophisticated computers, satellite remote sensing, and innovative methodologies are rapidly opening new possibilities for exploration and study. Oceanography is divided into four areas of emphasis: Biological Oceanography examines the processes governing the distribution, abundances, and production of plants, animals, and nutrients in the oceanic ecosystem. Emphasis is on investigations of bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic organisms.
