Paleolimnology
Paleolimnology is the study of past freshwater, saline, and brackish environments. In some cases, the history of the water body itself is important, but typically information is used in a wider geographical and ecological context. Often a core is taken from the sediments of a limnological system, and the fossils, geological and chemical signals that are preserved in the core are the clues to revealing the ecological history of the lake and the surrounding landscape. These clues can often result in quantitative and qualitative reconstructions of important lake chemistry and biology.

S cientists in the Museum's Quaternary Studies Program investigate the environments, plants, animals, and human adaptations of the Pleistocene (Ice-Age) and Holocene (last 10,000 years). This interdisciplinary research program examines past environments , biota, and human lifeways using the combined expertise of earth, natural, and social scientists. It's one of the few programs in the country that examines long-term trends in the climate, landscape, and biota of the Midwestern United States, with an emphasis on the period from 40,000 years ago to the present, while integrating changing human-land interactions over the last 11,500 years. Quaternary Studies at the University of WisconsinMadison
The study of the Quaternary Period has a long and illustrious history at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, beginning with T.C. Chamberlin and R.D. Salisbury a century ago. The UW-Madison now has one of the largest, most diverse groups of Quaternary researchers in North America. Interdisciplinary research is a particular strength in the Quaternary program at UW-Madison. Students can pursue an M.S. or Ph.D. in Quaternary studies in one or more of the graduate departments on campus. In addition to course work required for disciplinary or joint degree or degrees, students take appropriate course work in a related minor discipline. The following is a brief description of areas of interest. Following that is a list of faculty and links to their web sites where available. Finally, a list of cooperating departments also has links to department web pages. ARCHAEOLOGY, GEOARCHAEOLOGY
Much of the Quaternary-oriented climatological research at UW-Madison concerns the diagnosing and modeling of past and present climates on continent-wide and world-wide scales. This work includes using paleoenvironmental indicators, such as pollen and diatoms, to reconstruct climate changes over the past 18,000 years and the use of general-circulation and other climate models to simulate the behavior of past climates in the late Quaternary and the late Cenozoic. Additional research involves reconstructing the climatological history of the Great Lakes region over the past several centuries. Faculty in most of the other areas of Quaternary studies on campus participate in research that deals with climate change and paleoclimates.

NOAA Paleoclimatology is a branch of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. Paleo data come from natural sources such as tree rings, ice cores, corals, and ocean and lake sediments and extend the archive of weather and climate back hundreds to millions of years. NOAA Paleo provides data and information scientists need to understand natural climate variability and future climate change. We also operate the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology which distributes data contributed by scientists around the world. http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/index.html

Welcome to the companion site for the NOVA program " Warnings from the Ice ," originally broadcast on April 21, 1998. Over the last half-century, the coastal ice on the Antarctic Peninsula has been gradually disappearing. Scientists are beginning to wonder if we are on the verge of a great flood that may consume the world's coastlines. In the program, a group of scientists heads south to Antarctica in the race to answer questions and heed the warnings from the ice. Here's what you'll find online:

    Cambridge Quaternary
The Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years of geological time, saw major climatic changes which caused ice sheets to advance intotemperate latitudes. Repeated glacial episodes caused significant fluctuations in sea level, major geographical changes and major plant and animal population migrations. Sedimentary sequences record these changes in great detail and are central to unravelling past events. Cambridge Quaternary is a semi-informal research group of approximately 60 people within the University of Cambridge . Its constituent research groups are based in the Departments of Geography Plant Sciences Earth Sciences Archaeology and Zoology . Links also exist with the Department of Physics and the Scott Polar Research Institute . There is an excellent research environment at all levels, fostered by the staff (10 members), post-doctoral workers, and both Ph.D. and M.Phil. students pursuing interdisciplinary research in a wide range of Quaternary fields. This environment is unique in Britain, offering opportunities for research student training unequalled elsewhere, in terms of the range and quality of the expertise available.
    Cambridge Quaternary research
Cambridge Quaternary embraces a wide ranging approach to Quaternary Research. General research themes are based around 'core' areas of staff interest. These include palaeooceanography, archaeology, geochronology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeobotany, dendrochronology, micropalaeontology and palaeoecology. These mainstream interests are supplemented by the interaction of staff members with those from other University and external institutions to provide a diverse spectrum of topics. The understanding of palaeoenvironmental evolution is the central element underpinning all these themes; a foundation that provides a base from which to understand both present and future environmental and climatic change.but
