The pressure on the World's fresh water resources is increasing all the time, with population growth, rising per capita water consumption, pollution and environmental degradation all contributing to ever-greater problems of availability and distribution. Competition for scarce water resources leads to trans-boundary disputes on a range of scales, and water resources studies can no longer be confined to hydrological science, but need to consider the social, economic and even political dimensions.
The key to sustainable development of water resources lies in developing a thorough understanding of their variability and availability, and taking an integrated approach to their development and management, ensuring the participation of stakeholders at all stages of the project. Sclumberger Water Services is dedicated to providing a comprehensive service to our clients, covering all aspects of the evaluation, development and management of water resources, on scales ranging from individual abstractions up to entire river basins. US District Court dismisses monetary claims against poultry companies
On Wednesday July 22, 2009 US District Judge Gregory Frizzell, Norther District of Oklahoma, dismissed all monetary claims by the State of Oklahoma against poultry companies located in Arkansas. At issue has been the ongoing battle over pollution in the Illinois River, which flows from Northwestern Arkansas to Northeastern Oklahoma. The river of contention originates in the municipal headwaters cities of Fayetteville, Springdale, and Rogers, AR, flows through the pastoral hills and meadows of poultry country into Oklahoma, past Tahlequah and into Tenkiller Ferry Reservoir.
The river is nutrient enriched by all the things that happen when humans dominate a watershed - urban development, industrial discharge, municipal discharge, agricultural runoff, and hydrologic regime alteration.
Oklahoma wants Arkansas to cease and desist, or some say, cease to exist.
At issue was the ability of Oklahoma to seek remedy for damages without engaging the tribes in State of Oklahoma v. Tyson Foods, Inc., et. al., 05-cv-329, N.D. Okla.

Effective immediately, Sacramento County residents in flood-prone areas will receive up to a 30 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums. Under the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System, flood insurance premiums are adjusted downward to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from programs that focus on public information, flood hazard mapping, enforcement of regulations, flood preparedness, and flood damage reduction. Credited floodplain management activities have been shown to reduce flood losses and, therefore, flood insurance claims, disaster assistance payments, and the disruption of people's lives. “The inclusive and forward-looking strategy employed by Sacramento County floodplain managers strongly supports the hazard mitigation that we at FEMA are trying to foster,” said FEMA Region IX Administrator Nancy Ward. “The system as deployed in Sacramento County can serve as a recognized example for other communities on how to protect their citizens from becoming disaster victims.”

Integrated Water Resources Management The countries of the hemisphere share over 70 major transboundary river basins. In this context, the DSD primary objectives are to support Member States in their efforts to improve the management, conservation, and sustainable use of water resources by promoting social and economic growth. Specific actions involve the promotion of water governance, assistance in the development of policies, laws and regulations for integrated water resource management, capacity building in regional, national and local institutions, and promotion of the exchange of information through the IWRN (Inter-American Water Resources Network). Furthermore, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Bank, and the Global Environment Facility, DSD acts as a regional executing agency for various water resource management projects being conducted in trans boundary, multi-country river basins of Central and South America. The project's third phase is being developed to assist the Governments of Argentina and Bolivia in the execution of the SAP. The primary objective of the SAP is to promote environmentally sustainable development within the basin, taking into consideration the program of investments being prepared by the Binational Commission for the Development of the Upper Bermejo and Grande de Tarija Rivers Basins. This is seen as the only solution for reversing the environmental degradation occurring to the land and water resources of the binational basin.

Water Resources Introduction A Master of Science degree in Water Resources will teach you how to harvest, clean and protect the water resources of your civilization. You will study models that will teach you how to manage rain fall and snow melt. You will understand the behavior of watersheds in urban areas. You will analyze flood hazards and the effects of natural disasters on water resources. With this degree you will understand how to restore water resources, which in turn will restore civilizations.
Areas of Specialization
Course work is selected that will enable the student to do research and that forms a strong base for continued professional growth after graduation. The following are examples of graduate programs that a student could develop using the courses available:
  • Watershed Hydrology. Geographic Information Systems. Urban Water Resource Systems. Water Quality Modeling. Hydraulic and River Engineering.
However, a student may choose courses that provide a broad water resources education.

Florida's five water management districts, state agencies, the state university system, and federal agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are all actively working to help provide sustainable water for the future. However, state-wide coordination is difficult to achieve. One of the major, long-term objectives of the WRRC, which is headed by Dr. Kirk Hatfield at the University of Florida, is to serve as a focus and point of coordination for applied water-resources research in Florida.
