"A definition of biodiversity that is altogether simple, comprehensive, and fully operational ... is unlikely to be found." (Noss, 1990) Listed below are several different definitions used by resource managers and ecologists. Together, they should allow you to develop an understanding of the broad concept of biodiversity.

"Biological diversity is the variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur. Diversity can be defined as the number of different items and their relative frequency. For biological diversity, these items are organized at many levels, ranging from complete ecosystems to the chemical structures that are the molecular basis of heredity. Thus, the term encompasses different ecosystems, species, genes, and their relative abundance."

Biodiversity
Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is used to describe the immense variety and richness of life on Earth. The term itself is of relatively recent origin: it was coined during the National Forum on BioDiversity in 1986 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian Institution. A follow-up volume entitled ?Biodiversity,? edited by Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson, further entrenched the word in the scientific lingo. The popular use of the term (and the Forum that spawned it) grew out of a concern that efforts were needed to conserve, not just particularly charismatic animals, but the diversity of life around the world as the human population grew, extinction rates climbed, and scientists discovered both economic and ecological benefits to greater diversity. A number of definitions for biodiversity exist; the most simple refering to the combination of all life on Earth. A more nuanced definition emphasizes the vast richness and interconnectedness of species in a dynamic world. This richness not only encompasses the variety of different species in an area, but the genetic variety within a single species, as well as the differences of habitats and ecosystems around the world. The definition may also include the wealth of ecosystem processes, such as pollination, which occur as a result of species interaction. It is often in these ecosystem processes that humans find the value of biodiversity The most fundamental level of biodiversity is

The world lives amid the greatest mass extinction since the dinosaurs perished 65 million years ago and most of this loss is caused by human activities. Habitat loss, the introduction of exotic species through trade and travel, and climate change all contribute to biodiversity decline.

i Biodiversity includes not only the variety of species of plants and animals (species diversity), but also the variety of genes contained in all individual organisms (genetic diversity), and the variety of habitats, biological communities, and ecological processes (ecosystem diversity). ii Biodiversity is essential for our existence because the earth's biological systems and processes provide us with food, materials for clothing and shelter, fuel, medicine, clean water, and clean air. Biodiversity also provides all other species with the resources required for their survival. In fact, given the interdependence of the Earth's living organisms, ecosystems, and biological processes, without biodiversity, life on Earth would become extinct.
Species and Breeds
A species is a scientific classification used to group together plants or animals that have similar characteristics. Within the various domesticated animal species, there are many different subgroups called breeds. A breed is simply a specific variety of a particular domesticated animal species; while all breeds within the same species share common characteristics, each breed has certain unique traits. Unfortunately, the Earth is currently experiencing a rapid loss of biodiversity. Human-induced environmental destruction has eliminated habitats, killed living organisms, reduced genetic diversity, and caused the rate of species extinction to increase dramatically. In fact, unsustainable human activity is now the greatest threat to biodiversity.

35. Biodiversity Theory
Overview of some theoretical basics of biodiversity.
http://www.redpath-museum.mcgill.ca/Qbp/2.About Biodiversity/theory.html
A definition of Biodiversity Biodiversity has been most generally defined as the " full variety of life on Earth " ( Takacs, 1996 ). More specifically, biodiversity is the study of the processes that create and maintain variation. It is concerned with the variety of individuals within populations, the diversity of species within communities, and the range of ecological roles within ecosystems Graham Bell pers. comm. If this seems like a vague definition, that's because it is. There is no agreement on what exactly biodiversity means. It can refer to genetic diversity, to species diversity or to the diversity of environments or habitats. Some believe that it has simply replaced the terms "nature" or "wilderness" Chadwick, 1993 Furthermore, researchers and conservationists all employ a working definition of biodiversity shaped by their values, interests and goals. There is a great variety of human perception about what biodiversity is and, therefore, there are many different reasons why it important to conserve biological diversity. This section of the website will provide a brief overview of some theoretical basics of biodiversity. Each of four parts will discuss, respectively, the different levels of biodiversity, why biodiversity is valuable in itself and in its contribution to human well-being, the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity, and how biodiversity is assessed in the field.
