The scientific discipline of ecology encompasses areas from global processes (above), to the study of marine and terrestrial habitats (middle) to interspecific interactions such as predation and pollination (below). Ecology (from Greek , "house" or "living relations"; -λογία, "study of") is the scientific study of the relation of living organisms to each other and their surroundings. Ecology includes the study of plant and animal populations, plant and animal communities and ecosystems . Ecologists study a range of living phenomena from the role of bacteria in nutrient recycling to the effects of tropical rain forest on the Earth's atmosphere. The word "ecology" ("oekologie") was first used by citation needed the German scientist Ernst Haeckel 1834–1919. Haeckel was a zoologist, artist, writer, and later in life a professor of comparative anatomy. Ecology is a sub-discipline of biology , which is the study of life , branching out from the natural sciences in the late 19th century. Ecology is not synonymous with

Pollution/Conservation Activities
I. Introduction
The following science activities are aligned with and support the implementation of the State of Maine Learning Results. As the Science and Technology section of the Maine Learning Results states, Helping students develop curiosity and excitement for science and technology while they gain essential knowledge and skills is best achieved by actively engaging learners in multiple experiences that increase their ability to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. It was with this in mind that these activities were developed.
The activities encourage the development of basic science concepts through activity-based, learner centered approaches. The hands-on nature of the activities can be exciting and afford students an opportunity to become actively involved in their own learning. Hence, the activities are designed to: * actively engage student learning * be open-ended and encourage further study and/or application * be simple enough for students to engage in without an excessive amount of teacher input * make use of simple, low-cost materials and designs that present challenges without being so difficult as to create frustration.

What is Ecology?
What is ecology about, anyway?
Ecology includes not only how living things interact with each other, but how they interact with their physical environment: things such as climate and soil. Learn more about these interactions in the Biomes section.
Ecologists are the scientists who study ecology. They are curious and like to learn about living things by observing them, seeing what happens, and recording what they find. This is all part of the scientific method The Learn About Ecology section of this website introduces the study of ecology, describes careers in ecology, provides interviews with ecologists and gives an overview of the Kids do Ecology Program and website . It includes a discussion of endangered species , provides links to additional resources , and answers to frequently asked questions. Some ecologists study a specific species or habitat. They might study the behavior of a single species to see how it interacts with other organisms and the environment. Or, an ecologist might study many different species that either depend on each other (a food web, for example), or compete with each other for food and space. There are many fields of ecology with lots of things still to be discovered.

Information from Wikipedia on the ecological effects of wildfires.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_ecology
Fire ecology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Old Fire burning in the San Bernardino Mountains (image taken from the International Space Station Fire ecology is concerned with the processes linking the natural incidence of fire in an ecosystem and the ecological effects of this fire. Many ecosystems, such as the North American prairie and chaparral ecosystems , and the South African savanna , have evolved with fire as a natural and necessary contributor to habitat vitality and renewal. Many plant species in naturally fire-affected environments require fire to germinate. Fire suppression can lead to the build-up of inflammable debris and the creation of less frequent but much larger and destructive wildfires. Campaigns in the United States have historically molded public opinion to believe that wildfires are always harmful to nature. This view is based on the outdated belief that ecosystems progress toward an equilibrium and that any disturbance, such as fire, disrupts the harmony of nature. More recent ecological research has shown, however, that fire is an integral component in the function and biodiversity of many natural habitats, and that the organisms within these communities have adapted to withstand, and even to exploit, natural wildfire.

October 3, 2010 Scope of Work - Upper Kittitas Groundwater Study
The USGS has proposed a scope of work to study ground water in the Upper Kittitas area. Ecology has asked the ground water study advisory committee to provide any comments by October 15, 2010. Ecology anticipates signing a contract with USGS by the end of October. The problem statement and objectives for the study are: Problem — Baseflows in the tributary streams in the western portion of Kittitas County are important in the late summer and fall when demands on these streams peak. The ongoing USGS Yakima study indicates that groundwater and surface water are interconnected in the Yakima River basin, however the hydrogeologic framework and the potential impacts of groundwater withdrawals in the bedrock system on tributary streamflow were not investigated.

NIH-NSF Ecology of Infectious Diseases Program:  A Joint Program for Multidisciplinary Research Notice Number: NOT-TW-11-001
Key Dates Release Date:   October 29, 2010 Related Notices NOT-TW-07-001 Issued by Fogarty International Center ( FIC
Purpose This notice updates and supersedes the previous Guide Notice, NOT-TW-07-001 , published in the NIH Guide, November 30, 2006.  The Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have identified ecological sciences, including field biology and mathematical modeling, socio-ecology, and evolution as essential disciplines to understand and predict transmission of zoonotic and other infectious diseases that involve biotic or abiotic vectors, including diseases of humans, other terrestrial, freshwater or marine animals, and plants.  The FIC and the NSF will continue this multi-year collaboration on an important initiative to advance our ability to address the environmental and public health components of disease control.  As described in the NSF Program Solicitation ( NSF-10-616 U.S. and foreign institutions are eligible to apply.  The FIC mission prioritizes collaborative projects with scientists in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) focused on significant health threats in their countries.  Other NIH components have participated in the past and may do so again in the current cycle.  Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NIH or NSF program officials prior to submitting an application.  It is anticipated that six to eight awards will be made in fiscal year 2011 for projects to begin in the summer of 2011, subject to the availability of funds.  Each EID project may receive NIH support of up to $350,000 in direct costs, or NSF support of up to $500,000 in total costs, per year for up to five years.
