(Ecology is sometimes used incorrectly as a synonym for the natural environment or environmentalism
Ecology is essentially the study of the Earth 's organisms and their relationships with their abiotic and biotic environments. Ecology or ecological science, is the scientific study of the distribution and abundance of living organisms and how these properties are affected by interactions between the organisms and their environment. The environment of an organism includes both the physical properties, which can be described as the sum of local abiotic factors like climate and geology , as well as the other organisms that share its habitat. Ecology may be more simply defined as the relationship between living organisms and their abiotic and biotic environment or as "the study of the structure and function of nature" (Odum 1971). In this later case, structure includes the distribution patterns and abundance of organisms, and function includes the interactions of populations, including competition, predation, symbiosis , and nutrient and energy cycles.

This stand-alone program is an improved computing technology designed to alleviate the laborious task of segmenting foreground pixels from background in complex color and grayscale images of environmental samples. These image editing steps are required before object analysis and classification. Ecology is the study of ecosystems . Ecosystems describe the web or network of relations among organisms at different scales of organization. Since ecology refers to any form of biodiversity , ecologists research everything from tiny bacteria in nutrient recycling to the effects of tropical rain forests on the Earth's atmosphere. Scientists who study these interactions are called ecologists Terrestrial ecoregion and climate change research are two areas where ecologists (people studying ecology) now focus. There are many practical applications of ecology in conservation biology, wetland management, natural resource management ( agriculture forestry fisheries ), city planning (urban ecology), community health economics , and applied science. It provides a framework for understanding and researching human social interaction.

More precisely, there is agreement that ecology emerged as a distinct discipline at the turn of the 20th century, and that it gained public prominence in the 1960s, due to widespread concern for the state of the environment . Nonetheless, ecological thinking at some level has been around for a long time, and the principles of ecology have developed gradually, closely intertwined with the development of other biological disciplines. Thus, one of the first ecologists may have been Aristotle or perhaps his student

    Microbial ecology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Microbial ecology is the relationship of microorganisms with one another and with their environment. It concerns the three major domains of life — Eukaryota Archaea , and Bacteria — as well as viruses . Microorganisms, by their omnipresence, impact the entire biosphere . They are present in virtually all of our planet's environments, including some of the most extreme , from acidic lakes to the deepest ocean, and from frozen environments to hydrothermal vents. Microbes, especially bacteria, often engage in symbiotic relationships (either positive or negative) with other organisms, and these relationships affect the ecosystem. One example of these fundamental symbioses are chloroplasts , which allow eukaryotes to conduct photosynthesis . Chloroplasts are considered to be endosymbiotic cyanobacteria , a group of bacteria that are thought to be the origins of aerobic photosynthesis. Some theories state that this invention coincides with a major shift in the early earth's atmosphere, from a reducing atmosphere to an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Some theories go as far as saying that this shift in the balance of gasses might have triggered a global ice-age known as the Snowball Earth They are the backbone of all ecosystems , but even more so in the zones where light cannot approach and thus photosynthesis cannot be the basic means to collect energy. In such zones, chemosynthetic

Recently constructed wetland regeneration in Australia, on a site previously used for agriculture Restoration ecology is the scientific study and practice of renewing and restoring degraded, damaged, or destroyed ecosystems and habitats in the environment by active human intervention and action. Restoration ecology specifically refers to scientific studies and their name that was first developed in the 1980s.

Land managers, laypeople, and stewards have been practicing restoration for many hundreds, if not thousands of years, yet the scientific field of "restoration ecology" was first identified and coined in the late 1980s by John Aber and William Jordan. The study of restoration ecology has only become a robust and independent scientific discipline over the last two decades.
