invite you to the First Joint PSE-SETAC Conference on Ecotoxicology
16 - 19 September 2009, Kraków, Poland The conference is over - see for the latest news and awarded young scientists

Conference mission and a brief summary of the event
Last but not least, we had three excellent keynote talks , leading us from subcellular and cellular biomarkers (Pawe³ Migula) through populations (Richard Sibly) to ecosystem effects (Michiel Rutgers). The important aim of the conference was to facilitate cooperation between ecotoxicologists from all over Europe with special emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe. We had a pleasure to host scientists from as many as 16 countries, and thus we may say that from the point of view of "internationalization", the aim of the meeting has been fulfilled. Unfortunately, the Central and Eastern Europe countries were represented definitely inadequately - and that was certainly our failure. We hope, however, that with the help of those who participated in the event, the news will spread and we will be much more successful next time. We would like to thank everybody who participated in the meeting for being with us, for interesting presentations and discussions. Special thanks are due to our keynote speakers for their splendid talks, and to the members of the Scientific Committee for their help in organizing the meeting. Our sponsors are acknowledged for their financial contribution, which made it possible to keep the conference fee at the reasonable level to grant special discounts to a number of young scientists.

To do this, the program has five research teams, four of which focus on different aspects of fish physiology and biology, and one of which focuses on assessing risks posed to fish health by human activities, especially the releases of chemical contaminants into freshwater, estuarine, and marine waters. While the primary expertise of the Program is in ecotoxicology, there is substantial effort made to assess the normal physiology of wild fish, and natural variations in response to non-anthropogenic factors, as a backdrop against which human activities, such as the release of toxic chemicals, can be assessed. In addition to determining the effects of toxic contaminants on fish health, an important part of our research also examines the recovery of fish health after remedial activities are undertaken to clean up contaminated sites. This important line of research allows us to determine the efficacy of cleanup operations, and better determine the accuracy of our models which predict risk to our living aquatic resources.

Introducing ECETOC "The strength of ECETOC is not simply its scientific credibility, which is essential, but also its capacity to address real world issues confronting the industry as a whole or in part"
Martin Kayser, Chairman of the Board of Administration
ECETOC was established in 1978 as a scientific, non-profit making, non-commercial association and currently counts as its members 49 of the leading companies with interests in the manufacture and use of chemicals. An independent organisation, ECETOC provides a scientific forum through which the extensive specialist expertise of manufacturers and users can be harnessed to research, evaluate, assess, and publish reviews on the ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals, biomaterials and pharmaceuticals. The Association's main objective is to identify, evaluate, and through such knowledge help the industry to minimise any potentially adverse effects on human health and the environment that may arise from the manufacture and use of chemicals. To achieve this, ECETOC facilitates the networking of suitably qualified scientists from its member companies and co-operates in a scientific context with international agencies, government authorities and professional societies.

My interdisciplinary research program encompasses studies of multixenobiotic resistance in marine organisms at the level of the ecosystem, population, and organism, down to the cellular and molecular realms. This work combines marine environmental toxicology and ecology by integrating field research studying intertidal biodiversity at gradients from polluted coastal sites with cell biology studies of the metabolism and excretion of environmental contaminants in pollutant-tolerant organisms. These results are further applied to address the marine management issues of pollution abatement and conservation. Although the diversity of intertidal species decreases dramatically with increased proximity to a pollution source such as a pulp mill, a small number of hardy species are found adjacent to pollution sources which tolerate chronic exposure to hazardous environmental contaminants. Elucidating the function and regulation of xenobiotic transporters is an important issue in human health because defects in ABC transporters are responsible for several human genetic diseases and ABC transporters facilitate the cellular efflux of certain anti-cancer drugs in human tumours thus conferring MDR and confounding chemotherapy.

Ecotoxicology
Investigating the impacts of chemical pollutants on wildlife organisms
Brunel University has a long history of pioneering research in this field starting in 1978 when Professor John P. Sumpter established a research group to examine environmental toxicology with particular emphasis on the causes and effects of endocrine disruption in aquatic wildlife. The group has expanded in recent years to consider such effects in amphibians and molluscs as well as fish. Research in this area began with the unexpected finding that male fish living downstream of sewage treatment works synthesise the egg yolk protein, vitellogenin . Further studies, involving the exposure of caged fish to various concentrations of sewage effluent, revealed that this occured in a dose dependent manner (Fig.1) This phenomenon has been studies in greater depth using a combination of laboratory and field-based approaches. Extensive field studies have revealed further endocrine-mediated effects in fish such as intersexuality (Fig.3)

ardea consulting was established in 1997 to provide science-based consulting services specializing in ecological risk assessments , avian and wildlife toxicology and ecotoxicology . We work with clients to provide technical solutions to address regulatory and other ecological or environmental toxicology issues.
Since its founding, ardea consulting has worked principally on evaluating pesticide effects on birds and other wildlife. The experience gained is readily transferable to other contaminant groups. Projects have included field evaluation of potential exposure of wildlife to pesticides, metals, or PCBs, participation in ecological risk assessments, and preparation of research papers on various topics. In the summer of 2001, we relocated from Morrisville, Pennsylvania to Woodland, California. Our ecotoxicologists travel as needed; work has been conducted throughout the U.S. and Canada.
ardea provides technical advice and services while keeping the solutions as straightforward as possible. We fully investigate all issues and all available information is studied before we propose generating additional and possibly costly new data.
